Server was great. Tasted great. Will likely be back since it’s within walking distance from the hotel and sometimes you just don’t wanna drive anywhere…
I was staying at a hotel nearby, curious about Chicago Deep Dish Pizza, and Malnati’s had decent reviews.
First impression from outside was good. Call me a sucker for basic architecture, this place has some style. Inside is modern and warm. I sat at the empty bar and waited a few minutes to be noticed. The bartender was very personable and took care of my order.
I went for the signature “Chicago Deep Dish”, personal size.
I overheard another patron ask “How long does pizza take?”, answered with “About 30 minutes.” My wait expectation was set.
About 30 minutes layer, my pie was served.
All I can say is, they checked all the boxes perfectly. The first thing I noticed was the aroma of the sausage and crust. Each component, Sausage, Cheese, Sauce, and Crust were on point. My pizza expectation was exceeded. That was my experience tonight as a visitor just pasding through. Good enough to go out of my way to try this again when catching a flight out of Midway.
Our local friends advised us to get the pizza well done so the crust wouldn’t get too soggy by the time it made it home (15min) and that was good advice. There was still some crunch in the crust. Would eat again and would recommend!
Keep in mind this pizza takes 30-40 min to cook so it’s not a quick meal.
Pizza back to be cooked just a little more but it came back out burnt as shown in the pictures. The best thing was our server!
management came back to the table and made it right and addressed the pizza being burnt. That was very much appreciated.
Upon his return, he advised that it was their standard hard apple. I then asked him how the gluten-free pizza was. He hadn’t had it, but said that people seemed to like it and ordered it. So I ordered a water, the hard cider, and a thin crust gluten free pizza with pepperoni and sausage. He returned with my water, dropped it off, and left without a word. The bartender (or another server), who was very sweet, brought me my cider. The cider was very pleasantly dry and not terribly sweet.
After about half an hour, another sweet lady brought me an AMAZING pizza. It was absolutely incredible, loaded with toppings, and cooked to perfection, leaving the crust crisp and not undergone. I was surprised that it was cut into squares, but that made no difference to me. Side note… the cider was a PERFECT match for pizza.
At about 2 squares in, a HUGE party was seated next to me for my server. It became very noisy and he didn’t return until I was halfway thru my meal. He… expressed surprise that I had my food??
I finished my pizza and waited a VERY long time for my check. It was long enough that the table busser came and collected the dishes from my table. When the server returned, I told him that I’d like my check. He brought out a credit machine, told me my total and held out his hand for my card. I had to ask him to SHOW ME my bill!? I then paid and left.
Overall? Great restaurant and food, but the experience was less than stellar. I’ll definitely return, but that particular server (James G from my check) won’t be waiting on me again.
Another reason is because upon our arrival, the waitress had a huge party and they sat us in her section. Needless to say we never met her and another waiter that happened to pass by noticed that we had been sitting there a while. I’m not sure if we came on a bad day, but we won’t be back. The food was great though!
