We debated between Lou Malnati’s and Giordano’s, not a light decision when you genuinely know your pizza. Having eaten pizza in Italy and New York, we approached Chicago deep dish with curiosity… and a little apprehension.
We chose Lou’s, and it was absolutely the right call.
We started with mozzarella bites and fried ravioli, both divine. Crisp, golden exteriors giving way to molten, perfectly seasoned centres. These weren’t token appetizers; they set the tone properly.
Then came the showstopper: the Mike’s Hot Honey deep dish.
We ordered a medium.
It was enormous.
The kind of pizza that makes you instantly question your confidence. A box for leftovers was inevitable, and welcomed.
This wasn’t just sauce and cheese in a tall crust. It was layered properly: rich tomato sauce, indulgent cheese, Italian sausage that brought real depth and savoury richness, and that classic Chicago staple, giardiniera, cutting through with a bright, tangy heat. Then the sweet-spicy drizzle of hot honey tied it all together beautifully.
It was bold without being overwhelming. Indulgent without being heavy. Structured, balanced, and incredibly satisfying.
Deep dish scepticism? Gone.
Add in the prime North Michigan Avenue location, fantastic service, and a buzzing yet relaxed ambiance, and this became more than just “trying Chicago pizza”, it was an experience.
Chicago deep dish has officially earned our respect.
And from people who’ve eaten pizza in Italy and New York… that’s not said lightly
Then we ordered the Mike’s Hot Honey signature deep dish pizza… wow. The buttery crust was incredible, and the sweet heat from the hot honey took it to another level. Easily one of the best deep dish pizzas I’ve had.
Our bartender was also our server, and she was fantastic—super friendly, attentive, and made the whole experience even better. I ordered a Moscow mule and it was perfect!
Definitely recommend if you’ve never been here before! PS! They can ship these pizzas to your house!
The garlic bread was wonderful, simple, warm, and packed with flavor. On top of the great food, the service was excellent, quick, friendly, and attentive. They made helpful recommendations and checked in often without being overbearing. A classic Chicago experience done right.
I felt that the restaurant should provide better training to the host/hostess to have better manners as they are the first customers interaction and impression.
We made a reservation in advance, so our table was ready when we arrived — a big plus since the restaurant gets busy fast. We ordered the famous Chicago deep dish pizza and waited about 40 minutes for it, which is pretty standard. It was delicious and definitely a must-try for anyone visiting Chicago!
The ambiance is warm and lively, and the servers were friendly and accommodating throughout our visit.
It’s conveniently located near the Chicago Riverwalk, so it’s a great spot to grab a meal after sightseeing.
There’s also a fun wing photo op outside the store, and someone nearby offers to take and print your photo for a small tip — a cute souvenir to take home.
Overall, it’s a nice place to experience authentic Chicago-style deep dish pizza.
We only drank lemonades so we can’t comment on the drink menu.
