Los Dos Potrillos Mexican Restaurant – Highlands Ranch

  4.5 – 4,007 reviews   • Mexican restaurant

Born into a family with 15 children, Jose Ramirez was lucky number 7. He started his pursuit of this dream as a 13-year-old bagboy at a grocery store in what is known as The Highlands area of Denver. He later worked as a server at Las Palmas, working 60-70 hours per week, eventually becoming the server manager. He would work so much that he would oftentimes sleep in his car while providing for his wife, Martha, and his two sons, Luis and Daniel.Jose saved up enough money to open up the first Los Dos Potrillos location in Centennial in 2002. Jose opened this first location of Los Dos with just $5.18 left in his bank account.

Restaurant supplying Mexican favorites & margaritas in a colorful, lively atmosphere.

We frequent this establishment and it is consistently good. The service is attentive and the food comes out quickly unless extremely busy which is to be expected. We ordered 2 Top Shelf Margaritas with patron which are excellent and they don’t scrimp on the tequila which I like. Someone also ordered the Christmas drink on special, (pink drink in photo) and she really liked it. We ordered the Chile Relleno nachos which are a family favorite of slices of chile rellenos, ample cheese and smothered in green chile. They are delicious. We also got the steak tacos al carbon which are the best around with tender flavorful marinated tender cuts of steak in corn tortillas with pico de gallo and avocado. We finished off the meal with fried ice cream which is a nice treat on a fried sopaipilla type dough.

Los Dos Portillos is a spacious and vibrant Mexican restaurant that delivers on both atmosphere and flavor. With plenty of seating, it’s perfect for groups, celebrations, or just a casual night out. We got lunch here with our friends! It was fabulous.

The service was outstanding. They were friendly, attentive, and fast, making the entire experience smooth and enjoyable. Every dish we tried was solid, with fresh ingredients and great presentation. A standout was the shrimp ceviche was bright, citrusy, and super refreshing. The molcajete was to die for!! Must get if you can’t decide on what you want, get this!!! Ohhhh and the tortillas are homemade, and delicious.

We also tried the margarita tower, which was not only delicious but added a fun, festive touch to the table. Highly recommended if you’re going with friends! You get 4 margs with the tower!

Whether you’re a local or just passing through, Los Dos Portillos is a great spot for quality Mexican food in a lively, welcoming setting.

My favorite restaurant! The best queso I’ve had here and in Mexico. You can’t compare it to anything else. Steak picado and carne en su jugo are the best. Jose Luis gives us the best service always. He has an amazing attitude and such a humble soul. Overall amazing service.

Los Dos Potrillos: A South Metro Family Tradition

We recently dined at Los Dos Potrillos twice this week while visiting our children—it’s become a cherished family tradition for us. This popular spot is a testament to the years of hard work by Jose Ramirez and his family, who set out to provide the South Metro area with “Real Mexican Food.”

What started with the original location in Centennial has blossomed into six spots, including Littleton, Highlands Ranch, Parker, Castle Rock, and Denver, allowing more people to enjoy their authentic experience.

Despite the growth, Los Dos Potrillos has admirably maintained its family-friendly, “hole-in-the-wall” atmosphere. If you are looking for genuine Mexican cooking and a warm, inviting dining experience, this is the place to go. It’s clear that their dedication to quality and service is what makes them such a beloved local institution.

My work team decided Los Dos was the place they wanted to go for our holiday dinner. If I counted correctly there were 10 of us. The food was delicious! We had everything from no veggies fajitas, seafood tacos, taco salads, and combination plates. All of it came to the table hot and delicious. The serving staff was on top of their game. We had a couple camels disguised as people in our group, and their sodas, margaritas, and water never went dry. When plates went empty, the staff politely and unobtrusively removed it. Our server was super friendly (she kindly offered to take the group pic) and even more efficient. We never had to flag her down, she had a super power of being there before we asked. As busy as the restaurant was, no one rushed us out after we paid the check. We got to do our gift exchange which ended the night perfectly. Big group, small group, date night, family night, or any time you have a craving for good Mexican food, Los Dos is your place to go.

Great experience here! Our server was super friendly and attentive, and the manager Liz was amazing and made sure everything went smoothly. We came in with a party of 8 and they took great care of us, even bringing out a big queso dip for everyone to share. The service was fast, the food was good, and the whole staff was very welcoming. Definitely coming back

Love love love this restaurant! Staff is awesome and so is the food! My man and I come here all the time and we’ve never had any complaints whatsoever. Everything is fresh, flavorful and well made! They’re usually pretty packed on evenings and especially weekends, but if you have the time it is 100% worth the wait!
