I just really don’t understand the complaints, will have to go at a different time to see if I am missing something. Lots of people mentioned server and I get it honestly. She was excellent don’t get me confused but a laid back server is exactly what you want during the late nights and early morning. Some people may expect higher quality service but you went to a diner lol. She was not in your face, the place is small enough that she saw everyone in there from the bar area so she could see how tables were progressing. I think when people attend a restaurant they expect top service regardless of setting but it is a diner.
Since then ownership has changed hands several times, and they filmed SLPB here which was a disaster because they got just enough money to strip the charm out of it.
I brought my kid several years back. The food was *nowhere* near as good (and astonishingly expensive particularly given the low quality) but the waitress snuggled my baby and chatted with us while I ate so amazingly it still retains it’s humanity. This kind of stuff is what I love best about the place – you don’t come for food, you come for community – food is just a bonus.
These days the lighting kind of ruins it – it’s that cold, dispensary lighting that the world needs to agree to boycott. It is just awful. Either you don’t notice such things or you hate it. No one *wants* that lighting. Humans were not built to live in that light so lighting purchasers please take note and do some research – you are looking for adjectives like “warm”, “soft-white” and “flicker free”. You will attract more business even if people can’t articulate why.
My kid used to eat eggs and stopped after eating an egg at Llanerch because he thought it was so unpalatable. We got french fries which used to be the ultra crisp battered kind and now are those terrible starchy steak cut ones that no one likes. The coffee was insipid. Please take all this with a HEFTY grain of salt (they amount they need to put in their coffee to bump up the flavor): Llanerch is an INSTITUTION so the food will come and go based on who owns it, but it needs to exist regardless of food. It is an important part of the community.
When I hung out there someone named Ala ran it and the indomitable Malichai RAN it. The bathrooms are as gross as ever – they were gross then and they are still gross. That said, back when I was a regular there, even though the front was smokey and sketchy, the kitchen was SPOTLESS – like EAT OFF THE FLOOR CLEAN (we were there enough that we got tours of the kitchen late night when no one else was there). I caught a glimpse when we went a few years back and I don’t think that’s true any more. The front isn’t smokey (and differently sketchy) any more but the kitchen does not gleam. Back then the snapper soup (that we always wondered about) was made from REAL TURTLES with shells bouncing in a HUGE vat of bubbling broth. It was kind of shocking in the best possible way.
Anyway, I love Llanerch. If I ever win the lottery I will buy it and run it at cost just to make sure it exists. I hope it stays open forever…but maybe clean up the kitchen and get better lighting, and bring back slightly higher quality food. Also if you could do anything about the bathroom…well it wouldnt be my favorite dive if the bathroom floors werent oddly moist and sticky.
The service was exceptional — fast, friendly, and very attentive. The food was wonderful, well-prepared, perfectly seasoned, and served in generous portions. The pasta dishes come with a soup (you can choose between two options) and a bowl of salad with your choice of dressing — a really nice touch!
The place is clean, cozy, and family-friendly, perfect for any occasion. There’s a great variety on the menu, and the quality truly stands out in every detail.
It’s only 5 minutes from my house, and I’ll definitely be coming back often!
I’m giving it 5 stars — but if I could give more, I would!
We didn’t realize until being seated that the Diner was featured in Silver Linings Playbook which was a fun fact to see! Will absolutely return if in the area in the future.
