Unacceptable SERVICE and QUALITY.
TL:DR Recieved overcooked food – back of house blames it on customer. Bad service with good food is excusable and bad food with good service is ok too. It is unacceptable to be bad at both.
I ordered a Loco Moco around 6:30 on 10/30/2025.
The egg I received was completely overcooked and not sunny side up. I come back to get a new egg and the back of house has the audacity to tell me, “Make sure you tell us next time you want an over easy egg.”
Is this even a Hawaiian restaurant? All Loco Moco’s come standard with an over easy egg. Even the picture in the restaurant had an over easy egg. It is stupid to assume that I would want anything else.
I waited an extra 15 minutes for the back of staff to make a new egg (1 or 2 orders in store mind you). It takes 5 minutes to make an egg. Additionally they forgot my katsu sauce for another order.
Photos attached show the overcooked egg and a picture of the Loco Moco in store.
Management needs to do better. The cook should never interact with customers again. Unacceptable as a place of business and terrible service. Wasted my time walking back and making sure my order is correct and still blaming me.

Overall, this La Mesa location it’s not too bad. It’s pretty good. The barbecue beef again. This is a college area and yet this one in La Mesa beats the one located in La Jolla so something‘s going on over in the expensive area where they’re cheating the value or the quality where you have El Cajon and now here in La Mesa much better quality service is pretty good in the atmosphere. It’s it’s giving me that Hawaiian vibe a little bit so watch out expensive living areas you gotta pick up your game and stop being cheap.

I orders a bbq mixed plate over the phone. Arrived one girl was on her phone in the corner and let 4 more people walk in without moving. The cook finally asked me after 5 min if I said yes. He asked my name and charged me for a bbq mixed plate. When it got home it was all chicken. The cook had just made that plate I watched him put it on the counter. So he knew that was not a bbq mixed plate and proceeded to charge me for a bbq mixed plate. When I called in to tell them about their mistake they told me they couldn’t refund my money unless I came back which is 20 min drive from my house. Won’t be going there again poor service.

Terrible experience today Sunday October 5, 2025 around 2:30 pm. Cashier was careless and bite disrespectful no smile during the entire time she seems to hate her job, being in the food industry you have to take good care of the customers, we ask for recommendations and she just look at us like look at the menu. Just visited the PIFA festival and stopped by the L&L Hawaiian Barbecue pop-up— the food was incredible!
We tried a bit of everything: the barbecue chicken (super crispy and fresh), the chicken katsu (perfectly crisp), and the pork (so juicy). The mac salad and rice on the side were also amazing! Also, still thinking of the musubi because it was that good!!! 🙂
Everyone working the pop-up was so friendly and helpful. It felt like stepping into someone’s kitchen, with all the love and passion coming through in the food. Such an amazing experience overall, and it was a huge success. Thanks so much guys, can’t wait to visit the restaurant in person! 🙂
