As for the BBQ mix, I was really let down by the galbi ribs and steak here. Both were incredibly tough and hard to chew, which made the whole meal unpleasant. The meat was chewy to the point where it felt like a chore just to get through it. For the price, I expected much better quality. Again, there is too much rice. Definitely won’t be ordering these again. The chicken from this meal was good, though.
I was really disappointed with the mac salad. The texture was off, and it completely drowned out the flavors. I was expecting a creamy, well-balanced side, but this was a letdown like the one I had in Hawaii.
However, the katsu chicken and spam musubi here are okay. It’s the perfect snack or side dish, and I could honestly eat them all day.
The drinks were overpriced, and you could get it for cheap with a good serving size elsewhere. My husband and I did not like it, though.
The staff was polite and friendly.
The Loco Moco is a dish served with 2 hamburger patties topped with 2 runny eggs and drenched in a brown gravy with a side of mac salad. It had the same hearty, delicious taste that I remember from the islands. I have to say, I just love the combination of the warm, tasty gravy with rice with a runny egg and a piece of hamburger patty and the cool mac salad combination, it really is a perfect bite. The traditional barbecue platter had a sampling of all the barbecue selections, and it too was amazing. The saimin was perfect, and it easily warmed me up. Lastly, we also had the musubi trio, which had a spam, fried chicken, and barbecue chicken versions, and all three were awesome, I think I could have just this and be completely satisfied. One thing to note is that they only serve kalua pork on Fridays and Saturdays, so we weren’t able to try it on this visit. The menu is pretty big so we have to go multiple times to try everything.
Overall, it exceeded my expectations! The food very much brought me back to the meals we’ve had in Hawaii. If you’re a fan of places like Zippy’s, you’ll likely enjoy the food here too. The staff was friendly and practiced CDC recommendations during this ongoing pandemic. If you do order in person, expect a little 15 minute wait because everything is made to order. But trust me, it is worth it.
To make matters worse, my entire family, including my dog, got sick after consuming the food. It felt like $70 went straight into the trash. I’ve called twice now and was promised a callback, but it’s been 6 days, and I still haven’t received any response. This place is utterly disappointing and an insult to the culture it represents.
The city health inspector needs to shut this place down.
Avoid it at all costs
We ordered the chicken katsu curry, bbq chicken and the spam sushi. All of the meats were cooked very well and were extremely tasty. The curry and bbq sauce however was pretty basic. I think both sauces could be improved to make this a great place. Also the cost of the food is very good as the portions of food we received was excellent!
Socially distanced restaurant with some indoor and outdoor seats.
