I love soul food and after travelling through the south and having some amazing food and service on a previous trip to America, this place was a real disappointment. The service was shocking, the server at the counter called our number and gave us someone else’s order. It took a lot longer than it should have to sort it out and give us the correct food we had ordered.
Good points on food: I loved the mashed potatoes and gravy, that was a real highlight. Fried chicken was nice, Mac and cheese was ok.
Improvement needed on: red velvet cake. It’s the worst red velvet cake I’ve ever had. It was stale and the icing was like pure icing sugar with water. Collard greens were watery and tasteless. Couldn’t eat them after just a taste. Coleslaw was so sweet, it’s salad, it doesn’t need an overdose of sugar.

This was my first time coming here to this restaurant and I was totally disappointed. I was disappointed with the rudeness of the chef and also the owner. I had an event there and I got raw chicken and they did refry the chicken but some of my clients wanted some cake and the owner refused to give us two slices of cake. That is no excuse when you gave us raw chicken and I was totally disappointed with her attitude and her rudeness towards me and my customers. Also, the chef came out the kitchen and telling us it’s time for us to wrap it up we have to go pointing at his watch when we were already wrapping it up and getting ready to leave but that was so inconsiderate and definitely not professional and I was not pleased with that. I’m also not pleased with receiving can string beans I guess you don’t need protection again and you’re going to charge me like they’re fresh. The ribs were okay the red punch and iced tea where super sweet. The Fried Chicken definitely was okay I didn’t try the rest of the food but it was definitely the unprofessionalism for me and also the floors need to be clean every time you walk you get that sticky noise when you walk it’s a lot of things that need to be upgraded in this restaurant yes but poor customer service was definitely number one on my hit list with this restaurant.

Ordered here last night. Drove in the cold to pick up my food and the store is closed. Shut all the way down. No cars around the establishment. Decided to eat somewhere else. Also another lady pulled up looking for her order. Next morning, that charge still went through. Robbed me for $40. Be aware. I’ll try to get the money back but idk. I ordered around 8:40 pm and by 9:30 I left cause food at Steaks was ready. Check pics.

You’ve heard of a place going down hill. Well this place has made it to the bottom of the hill. Hadn’t been here in years. Stopped going even before I moved away but I was traveling through today and decided to pop in. Well, almost everything on the line was either overcooked or burnt. Think I’m exaggerating? See the attached pictures. They tried to cover the black burned food with yellow gravy. Lol. Against better judgement I decided to get a smothered pork chop. The gravy was soooo flavorful, but that’s where it ended. The pork chop was severely overcooked. Dry and tough as suede. Couldn’t tell because it was covered in gravy. So as not to be wasteful I did manage it eat half of it, which has now been painfully sitting in my chest for 2 hours. Even the bottle of diet Pepsi I bought was less than cold and had hardly no carbonation. I don’t know HOW they managed that. This place should do everyone a favor and just shut down already! And stop taking people’s money. It’s clear they don’t take any pride in what they’re doing. I will never return.

I had the 3 piece catfish meal with Mac&Cheese and collard greens. I also ordered a side of cabbage and mashed potatoes with gravy. I wanted to sample their sides as I know I can’t eat all this food.

Well the verdict is the food isn’t that good. It’s not bad ,but it’s just not outstanding. I’d eat it again if there was nothing else around but I don’t see stopping in again. The collard tasted like the were from the can. The Mac&Cheese was bland. The fried catfish had a nice crust but it lacked any seasoning. I did like the cabbage but it was average at best.

This is a cafeteria style restaurant, similar to Panda Express, which is not what I was expecting. It looks fancy on the outside, but not so much on the inside. Stand in line. Give your order. Get your food in a to go bag even though you intend to dine in. It was not what I was in the mood for at the time. They also charge you as though it where an elaborate sit-down restaurant where they take your order and bring you your meal. You won’t get that experience here. Speaking of meal: it was just o.k; although, the portions where enormous. I had the ribs. I like my ribs to fall off the bones; these did not. Finally, there’s no explanation for the statue of an Italian waiter at a soul food restaurant.

Very disappointed. 2 stars for portion sizes only. My sister talked this place up, so I was excited when she picked this place for take out dinner for her birthday. Kept it simple with fried shrimp, mac n cheese and yams. Honestly, labeling this as “soul food” should only be limited to the type of food. Not the quality. Yams were good, but the mac n cheese had no seasoning whatsoever and was almost like they put layers of sliced cheese on top and there was almost no cheese throughout to hold it together… the shrimp was bland and rubbery like it’d been sitting under lights all day. Needless to say, I didn’t even eat half the food. Oh and I also ordered “peach cobbler” which was more like peach pudding…. The serving size was huge, but the consistency and flavor were way off. One fork full and in the trash it went. SMH. I really wanted to like this place…. oh well

I got the fried chicken with dark meat and sides of Mac and cheese and mashed potatoes with gravy. It also came with cornbread. It was a lot of food and I got two meals out of it. The food was excellent and those were some of the best mashed potatoes I ever had!

My boyfriend got the BBQ pork with coleslaw and yams. He enjoyed everything as well.

We’ve tried here several times mainly because proximity makes it convenient. The first time was because there was a Levi’s by the Navy Yard that close down several years ago that was North Carolina soul and BBQ, black owned. And we weren’t sure of they were the same place. They’re nowhere near the same. Now it works if we don’t want to go to further or cook. They’ve dropped in skill each time, so it’s a 2/ 2.5 now. I wouldn’t have given it higher than a 3.5 the first time. Now that we’ve gone three times I can speak to all experiences.

I like that the catfish is cooked to order so it’s hot, but that’s as far as it goes. The first time the sides were good and catfish was burned and dried out. But it was carry out, and I didn’t check before leaving. So that’s on me.

Sides are hit or miss. They don’t always have all sides that they list on the menu available. Mac and cheese was good once but of late it has been watery like they cooked noodles and mixed everything without draining water. But excess water seems to be a thing with sides. On reheat, Mac and cheese was in a pool of “juice.” I thought the green bean juice had spilled over, but no it was Mac noodle water. I wasn’t a fan of the yams. Green beans and cabbage are decent. Butter beans taste like Glory. Sides don’t seem to be seasoned with much besides salt and oil…or butter, maybe.

The catfish is consistently dark brown to the point of looking burned, but the level of doneness is always surprise. It’s either almost burned and dried out or almost burned but still undercooked. I’ve asked they not cook it like that, but apparently they don’t know how to cook catfish to be golden brown and done. Fried chicken overcooked and dried out, but the meats do sit under a hot light soooooo.

All in all, it took me three times to realize it’s a Piccadilly Cafeteria style spot, so I shouldn’t expect hot, fresh, home cooked, well-seasone food that’s a staple and requirement of southern soul food. I think we’ll stick to going to Ella Ray’s in Forestville if I don’t want to cook myself. They’re food is always on point and taste like the southern cooking (SC/GA) we grew up on.
