During my most recent trip to Le Lai I found myself profoundly disappointed with the downturn in quality of food. Especially when considering that I have always thought of it as one of the better Chinese restaurants in McAllen. We had ordered the Basil Eggplant, one of our absolute favorites, and were disappointed that it was mainly onion with a minimal amount of eggplant and the sauce was overpowered by the flavor of Szechuan peppercorns. The Chicken Almond was again a disappointment with the flavor of raw oyster sauce, and the chicken had a slightly funky aftertaste that might be familiar to some that have been to low quality Chinese restaurants. It wasn’t all bad our third dish, Shrimp Pad Thai, was actually very good as well as the service by our waiter. Overall I hope they fix this downward trend because we have been patronizing this restaurant since as long as it’s been open

Amazing vegetarian options! They have spring rolls with tofu and peanut sauce that are so good and filled with fresh veggies. Every kind of tofu made to perfection. Vegetables are very high quality and fresh. I love picking up a couple orders of vegetables and tofus for my house for the week so we have protein + veggies w out having to cook.

This was an excellent place to meet with friends. We dined in for dinner and the food was fresh and delicious.
I enjoyed the restaurant’s atmosphere since it was relaxed and comfortable.
I recommend the Jazmin tea.
I will get back as soon as I can to try out more dishes from their extensive menu.

I went to Le Lai Eastern Restaurant for a late lunch. It is located on 10th Street just north of Harvey. The restaurant has been around for a long time and it shows on the interior. I ordered a lunch special, Chicken lo mein, which comes with soup and an egg roll, and hot tea. Good thing I speak Spanish because our server couldn’t speak English. Anyways, tea arrived, I always liked how light in flavor the Jasmine tea is. My hot and sour soup came first, then the food didn’t take long, and it was steaming hot. It was good and enjoyable, and very filling. They definitely do not skimp on the portions here.

I’ve been to this restaurant at least 10 times over the years. The food can be good but the quality is very inconsistent. The real problem with this establishment is lack of service and management.
Most recently I arrived at 8:28 pm with a party of 10, more than 30 minutes ahead of closing, and moreover we had called ahead of time to place our order to expedite things out of respect knowing we are a big party.
The two staff (a man and woman present at closing on 12/30) refused to seat us unless we promised to leave by 9 pm sharp. I asked to speak to a manager and they said none was present and they refused to give their names or a contact number. This kind of behavior is completely against the standards of the restaurant industry and speaks to the severe lack of oversight. It also explains why food quality is highly variable and orders take at times 45 minutes to arrive.
I used to drive from 45 mins away to come here but will not be visiting again. My brother left a glowing review 5 months ago but will have to change his review as well, as will the other members of my family.

The doors are not handicap accessible, however there’s plenty of room for walking aids/wheelchairs.
This was my first time here as an adult, & I highly recommend it. Our orders were out fairly quickly, the service was attentive & patient, & the atmosphere was like visiting an old friend. I used to come here with my mom & her best friend growing up, & the portions were HUMONGOUS. This time around, we chose the chicken orange, & the seafood delight, & highly recommend the seafood, as well as the hot & sour soup. That’s coming from someone with the palette of a child. You used to be able to feed 3 people with 1 plate, & now they’re reasonably portioned. I’d maybe go back if the host could forget me very nearly attempting to walk out of their pristine front window, lol.

Texas law requires that restaurants that charge service fees or mandatory tips must clearly disclose the fee to customers before they place their order or receive their bill. The notification should be in writing and easily visible, such as on the menu or posted prominently in the restaurant.
No where in this establishment does it say, there is an auto gratuity. I was already planning on tipping my server, I never actually look at my receipt. I’m glad I did this time because even the server had no idea there was a gratuity already included in the sale.
I will be reporting this accordingly because what they are doing is illegal.

Order a dish that was very salty. The server was very nice and apologized for the dish. Now the manager on the other hand, she had an attitude when she walked up to the table. Told her that the dish was very salty her response was the dish is what it is. If I wanted a new plate it would be just as salty. And I that would still have to pay for the dish I wanted it or not. Need less to say the manager messed up my lunch with my wife with her bad attitude and lack of attempt to make it right. One and only time eating there.
