With a 2.9 rating on Google, we didn’t expect much. Upon entering, we waited to be seated as instructed. The host or server was no where in sight so we waited a couple minutes before the server came out with plates of food for a table before greeting us and getting us seated.
Immediately upon getting seated, he told us it will be a ten minutes wait before he can get to us. We were taken aback a little but understood.
The menu has a wide variety of selection, especially being in landlocked Colorado. They offer various types of seafood ceviche, almost like back home in Vegas (yes Vegas also surprisingly has many mariscos Mexican joints if you know where to find them.)
After 5 minutes of sitting down, our host server returned and was ready to take our orders. I settled on 4 tacos: 2 al pastor and 2 lengua (beef tongue) (side note: this is how I judge the authenticity of a Mexican restaurant. If they don’t even serve lengua, are they even a Mexican restaurant, bro?)
I highly recommend the al pastor. They were so good that I had wished I ordered 4 al pastor. The lengua was good, don’t get me wrong, but the al pastor is what you write home around. The sweetness of the grilled diced Pineapple with the tender pork were amazing.
My companions had the burger (teenager) and chimnichanga. I’m told the chimnichanga beats our Vegas local Mexican joint, which is a very high praise. Burger was good but their fries were even better. Beer battered fries, my favorite, and fresh.
Considering there was only the one server host, he tries to accommodate and work quickly. If you’re the type of people who gets upset because you can’t be kind and understanding, then don’t come here. But if you’re looking for authentic Mexican food in Glenwood Springs CO and have a kind soul, then you don’t regret it.
(We did overhear the table next to us complaining about the size of the ceviche. He said it was too small for $20 and how he’s from California and their serving is much bigger. He ended up returning the ceviche. I saw the size and it was definitely not huge but reasonable. And remember you’re no where near the ocean. Last i checked you can’t catch shrimps in the Colorado River. )
So don’t let the lackluster rating deter you from enjoying Las Palmas. You might agree that this is a little hidden gem.
Food was delicious and good but prices were way too high for tiny portions we got.
Service was neither good nor bad, main issue was that we were hungry and we are thinking of going somewhere else after lunch here to eat.
The plates food come on are huge, like 14″. The food was good, with the usual accompaniment of refried beans and red rice. Chips and salsa came with meal. Chilies Rellenos are normally served with red chile but I asked for green, which came with a $2 charge.
It was a bit pricey at $44 for Rellenos and a beer
Although the food tasted good, portions were small for the price. They have hidden charges for everything. He didn’t ask what kind of tortillas we wanted with our fajitas, brought us the wrong kind, then charged us $4 additional to bring the kind we wanted. He brought out one of our drinks in a glass that had a huge crack in it, and didn’t take it back to remake or put in another glass. We also found that using a credit card adds a 3.5% extra charge.
I recommend eating somewhere else. I wish I’d checked reviews before spending our time and money at this restaurant.
