This is a true neighborhood cafe. I love it. Also, you can tell this is a very well-run place with a strong team. Everything is always clean and tidy, and the baked goods look so fresh. I only ever get coffee but the food seems fantastic. Maybe the quality has to do with the fact that lots of the employees work here for years and are so friendly. I have never observed such a low turnover rate at a cafe.

I got their veggie pastry that has spinach, potatoes and a PERFECTLY cooked egg on top. Amazing, I will be back! I also got a strawberry and cream cheese danish which was unique because I don’t usually see strawberries in many pastries. It was divine!

I ordered a plain croissant, but was given a ham-and-cheese croissant instead. It was for my 4-year-old daughter, so she didn’t realize it wasn’t plain until she bit into the ham.
I returned to the bakery and explained that I had ordered plain but received the wrong item. The person in charge told me that I would need to pay again for a plain croissant and said “they would not give free food to me”. I explained that I had already paid for a plain croissant and that this was their mistake.
After a prolonged and uncomfortable exchange, they finally gave me a plain croissant without charging.
At that point, the same staff member handed the leftover croissant to me and said, take your food. I handed it back, as I did not want it. As I was walking toward the door, from the cashier area toward the exit, the same staff member threw the leftover croissant at my body while yelling that | was not welcome in the bakery.
This was not just an ordering mistake. The situation was handled with hostility and unprofessional behavior, and the physical act of throwing food at a customer was unacceptable.

2024 Review: This might not be a fair review because I came in at 3:30pm, 30 minutes before 4pm closing time on a hot Saturday. After all, there’s not much business for a coffee shop when it’s 90° outside in Oakland…

At the same time, I was hoping for a sense of ease while they’re cleaning up, for instance, “it’s OK we’ll be here for a bit anyhow so you can relax.“

Instead I got, “we’re going to be closing in five minutes.” That was five minutes after I sat down with my large decaf latte and a raspberry pistachio pastry (by the way, both of those were great). It was only 3:40pm. So they were closing at 3:45pm?

So, I should know better and immediately go to Philz or Pete’s or Blue Bottle and get to hang out until 6:30pm. But I wanted to check out what was more local to me, and now I know.

Come here when you have time before closing, get a pastry and coffee, and relax in the curious French ambience

2026 Edit: the owner responded, which I appreciated… 2 years later! But anyway, the apology took responsibility and registered the impact. However I still feel subtly blamed, that somehow I shouldn’t be coming in 30 minutes before closing for a coffee and pastry? I love when apologies take responsibility, register the impact and do not try to explain their operational issues. Saying we’re closing in 5 minutes when there are 20 minutes left sounds like someone was trying to leave early. That’s for them to fix.

As for replying 2 years later, I get it, most small business owners don’t have a social media staff…. That got me to thinking, where are the social-media-savvy entrepreneurs, handling numerous small business accounts?

Anyhow, like I said before, the coffee and pastry were good, so leave lots of time in case staff are trying to leave early.

Meh. The tables inside were dirty and hadn’t been wiped down. No, no one was sitting at them. The girl at the front said hi so that was chill. An elderly lady had asked a worker to come check out flooring was coming up (I watched her trip over it) and the girl was kind of short about it without acknowledging her. She said, “the floor? Yeah, I know. The owner knows.” As she walked away. It was just rude. Like if the owner knows…fix it. Close that part off so someone doesn’t fall and get hurt and you don’t get sued for it? Come on.

I just came first a bagel but didn’t see any on the menu so I grabbed a BLT sandwich. $13 + 20% tip on a take out…and there were only 3 slices of bacon on the sandwich. Kind of whack.

I think its a spot you come to if you grew up around this block or if you’re needing convenience, but I wouldn’t recommend it and I wouldn’t stop there again.

Love this place. Great croissant, food, and coffee. It’s a small place with limited metered parking, but has seating both indoor and out, and it’s one of our regular stops on the way back from a hike.

I’m updating my review because I have been going here for two years now, and it is one of my favorite places. The food is really, really delicious. Lately I’ve been getting their veggie quinoa bowl with the Dijon mustard dressing. So yummy!

Also, please bus your table!

This was so did disappointing. After a long hike and with my last dollars i ordered a burger from here online. When i got there to pick up my food, they told me they were out of burgers but could substitute with tri-tip. So i had to wait for them to make it, instead of being able to just pick it up and go. Then the woman asked me if i got the tea i ordered online. No. And then i told her, and i also ordered potatoes. She didn’t even acknowledge me and then just started talking to another (chatty patty) customer. i eventually interrupted to ask if they were making the potatoes. When she said yes, i told her i was going to sit and eat my sandwich (at this point i was starving). The sandwich bread was so thick and chewy i opened it up and ate everything but the bread. The meat was skimpy. The potatoes were mashed, but not quite, with some sort of mild seasoning and i only took a bite of it. She did apologize about the service and give me 2 strips of bacon. The bacon was good. They made me late for my next apt. Though.

The Chocolate Croissant gets a little orange marmelade in it, the combination is really great. Warm baguettes and great pastries. If you live in the Oakland Hills, this the place to go to find your french goodies ツ
