Stopped by during off peak hours so the vibe was pretty relaxed. There’re only a couple of tables. The host was also the server which was fine as we received great service. We arrived just after lunch so we didn’t try any of the cocktails off of their full size bar.
My guest ordered a seafood burrito with rice, beans and salad and they really enjoyed it; they cleaned the whole plate. I ordered the Camarones Al Mojo De Ajo and it was loaded with jumbo shrimp. The shrimp were tender and full of flavor. It was served with a tasty salad and rice. Both dishes and service were phenomenal. Again, the ambience was a bit calm and quiet, but I believe it was because of the time we were there.
The prices were a bit on the low side for what we ordered; my plate was loaded with Jumbo shrimp and my guest’s dish was stuffed with seafood. I wouldn’t be surprised if they adjust and raise prices.
I highly recommend this place and will visit again soon; I’ll probably come back during the evening to checkout the ambience.

I love the colors, I loved the service and I over ate. One margarita, 3 tacos and queso later…. I’m so happy I stopped in. I can’t say enough how wonderful the service was. The fish tacos weren’t bad but the steak taco was much better. I will definitely be back to try other dishes.

This is the second time I’ve eaten here and the food is beyond good. I went with my 6 year old grandson and he even loved it, we both ate everything, see photos. The staff was very welcoming, and the whole atmosphere was very pleasant. We went around 3pm after a day at the science museum (it’s right across the street). We had steak fajitas and 2 beef tacos plate with rice and beans $32.

Second visit was just as great as our first! Seafood boil was so good and enough for both my daughter and I to share! They chanted up how they serve their chips and salsa and the bigger basket holds plenty for 4 people to share. I ordered the sopa de pollo and asked if they had the little tortilla strips that are like wonton strips served at Chinese restaurants. Our server had them make me some on the fly! Above and beyond! Love this place!!!
Our new favorite spot for Mexican! Bright open concept restaurant with cheery ocean decor. Chips and salsa delivered quickly on seating and drink orders shortly after. For appetizers we got the guacamole and queso which were both decent. Our entrees were all fantastic. My son had the birria tacos and my husband had the carne asada tacos. Both came with a very large amount of meat on each taco. The small side of red salsa that came with the carne asada tacos was the star of the show. It tasted more like a habanero salsa and my guys were overjoyed! They both eat jalapeños and habenero peppers with most meals at home and this was the first time they have found a restaurant that has ever served a salsa they found was actually spicy! My shrimp fajitas were the best I’ve ever tasted! Service was friendly and efficient. Only negative was it took a long time to get our check and to go boxes but we were not leaving without those leftovers! Highly recommend and we will be back!

La Playa offers a fresh and exciting vibe for a Mexican dining experience. Located in the old Julian’s restaurant; La Playa has taken the reins and is off to a great start with a bountiful menu of cuisine and beverages. There are wonderful under the sea themed murals throughout the interior of the restaurant the tables resemble the edge of the shore where the water rolls up on the beach (decor is really pleasing). We began our meal with the complimentary chips and salsa served in a literal boat basket the salsa had al lil hint of heat. We also ordered the shrimp empanadas (let me you they were awesome). And the dipping sauces they came with complimented wonderfully. For an entree we ordered Chimichangas. I had the seafood chimichanga and OhMyGosh!!! I was more than satisfied it was loaded with everything the menu said. We also had the Chicken and Beef chimichangas which were also very flavorful as well. Both meals came with salad with a delicious tropical fruit dressing, refried beans, brown/ white rice. The portions were excellent, the flavors very palate friendly, and the service was Very hospitable our waiter was Edgar who was very attentive and courteous. La Playa also offers big tv screens where you can catch a game, a nice size bar, space for large parties; and outdoor dining options. Overall a great place to dine if you’re seeking a fresh take on Mexican food in RVA.

It was a great experience. The restaurant is huge, bright, and festive. There was no wait to get seated around 12:40PM on Mon. The food was fantastic. Everything was cooked to perfection. The restrooms were clean. The people who worked there were very nice and helpful. The price was unbelievable. Guess who is going back soon!

This is my second time coming and the food has NOT disappoint. Everything Ive tasted was amazing, and they have happy hours every day which is amazing. Ive tried a lot of things but any of the red snapper dish are amazing. My friend was in town from NJ this past weekend and she already said she cant wait to come back and eat here again.

This place keeps me coming back. Between the great service, food, and atmosphere it’s a 1st stop in my friends and I’s bar hopping night. Everything I’ve gotten is tasty! Carlos is awesome at the bar, recognizes familiar faces and ensures an awesome experience with top notch drinks!
