The service was attentive and welcoming, and the food was excellent. I ordered the fettuccine Alfredo and it was rich, creamy, and full of flavor—comforting but still elevated. We finished with the tiramisu for dessert, and it was really good, the perfect sweet ending to the meal.
Between the food, the vibe, and the service, La Grotta checks all the boxes. Definitely a spot we’ll be coming back to.
From the moment we stepped inside, the ambiance was enchanting, and our waiter was truly a gentleman. He attentively catered to our every need and answered all our questions about the menu. He even encouraged me to try frog’s legs, which I was initially hesitant about. Now, I can confidently say that it was the best place to try them for the first time.
Without a doubt, this is one of the best restaurants for celebrating special occasions with that extra special someone, and I couldn’t recommend it more!
La Grotta Ristorante in downtown Richmond is the kind of place where you sit down expecting a nice dinner and suddenly find yourself whispering, “This is what love tastes like.” The pasta? Silky. The sauces? Divine. The service? So warm I started checking Zillow for apartments in the building.
But let’s skip straight to the star of the show:
THE DESSERT TRIO.
If you leave La Grotta without ordering it, I’m convinced the staff should be legally allowed to chase you down Cary Street and kindly escort you back inside. It’s that serious.
One bite of the tiramisu and I forgot my own birthday.
The panna cotta made me question every life decision that led me to not order two of them.
The cheesecake? I briefly levitated. Pretty sure I saw a soft glow around the plate.
By the end I was ready to write “La Grotta” on emergency contact forms.
If you want a meal that hugs you from the inside, a staff that treats you like famiglia, and a dessert trio that could negotiate world peace, this is the place.
10/10 would eat here again.
And again.
And again, until they ask me to buy a loyalty card or contribute to rent.
We had the five course meal and everything was absolute perfect from appetizer to the desserts. We were so full from the appetizer, pasta, and salad that by the time my entree came I was so full. Couldn’t stop eating though because everything was so good. The plating from the chef was beautiful, and everything complemented each other so well. Food came out piping hot (which how often do you dine out at places and the food is hot?? Not often!!). My favorites were the oysters (they were on specials menu), the caesar salad (the dressing was so perfect), the pope’s fettuccine (handmade pasta and that sauce was insanely good), the quail entree, and the tiramisu.
Could write a whole paragraph on the tiramisu. You have not dined at La Grotta if you haven’t had the tiramisu. Yes, it is that good.
I agree with Micah Gaudio, who reviewed this place two weeks ago. He stated that by the end of his meal, he was ready to write “La Grotta” on his emergency contact forms. I will be doing the same — but also adding our waiter Enzo on them as well.
Thank you La Grotta for the amazing experience. You are the standard. We will be coming back for every special occasion – and we will be dining with Enzo!!!
Thank you to Roger, Andrea and Antonio, and everyone we had the pleasure of meeting during our night at La Grotta! We had amazing food and service and the best espresso martinis I’ve ever had 🙂 We look forward to visiting again!
The server was very nice and explain very well our menu.
I was invited to celebrate my birthday and got the coconut cake and a birthday candle made me feel special.
I think the decor and atmosphere really shine here it’s very beautiful and special.
It was a bustling Saturday. Our waiter tried but fell short. No fresh pepper for my salad. Asparagus came very late and should have been comped. Had to ask for more water. Twice
Sad to say, the bread was the best part of the meal. The fresh tomato and basil for the bread had more flavor than our entrees. Just like the tablecloths, the entrees were all show: well plated, short on flavor.
I went with two amazing friends, and we had such a wonderful evening. Our server, Jeremy, was fantastic — super friendly, knowledgeable about the menu, and gave us a perfect wine pairing to complement our meal.
We all chose the Taste of Italy menu, and for $65, I would highly recommend it — such a great value for the quality and variety!
For my courses, I had:
• First course: Grilled octopus (a special of the day) — beautifully cooked, slightly sweet, and so fresh and vibrant.
• Second course: Gnocchi — tender, pillowy, with a perfectly balanced red sauce.
• Entree: Buffalo ribeye — incredibly tender, and the Gorgonzola-pistachio sauce was a match made in heaven.
• Dessert: Cake (not pictured) — I had to take this one to-go because I was stuffed by the end, but it was worth saving room for!
Every dish was a hit, and the whole experience made for a perfect night out. If you haven’t been yet, do yourself a favor and go!
