My beef vegetable soup was good, but the yellow rice and chicken were delicious! I had the fried plantains which hit the spot after the other food.
The portion sizes were very large in my opinion.
Would definitely eat here again!
Because we had a long layover we ended up back here for lunch . It’s a buffet / cafeteria style service . Fast and delish ! We got the ropa vieja and ordered an extra side of rice and split it between 2 people and we were super satisfied . The staff are super friendly
Though the ropa vieja had nice flavor and decent portion size, the pan con bistec is a waste of money and horrible. I should have asked for a refund and we threw most of the sandwich away in the trash. Very disappointing, considering I’ve left this restaurant 5 stars in the past and passed up all eateries in Miami to specifically eat here, I would not do it again.
The food is legitimately outstanding, and portion was very satisfying, just like ive lwft grandmothers house. The ropa vieja was a standout; the shredded beef practically melts and the tomato-based sauce has that slow-cooked, abuelita’s-kitchen depth of flavor you rarely find in an airport. Black beans and rice are spot-on, maduros are caramelized just right (never greasy).
Service is shockingly fast and warm for an airport environment. The staff moves like they’ve done this a million times (because they have), yet they still greet you with a genuine “mi amor” or “¿cómo estás?” that instantly makes you feel like you’re back in Miami proper. That kind of effortless hospitality is rare anywhere, let alone inside security.
Atmosphere-wise, it’s everything you want from a classic La Carreta: bright colors, photos of old Havana, Latin music at the perfect volume, and that iconic ventanita vibe even though you’re technically inside the terminal. It smells like café con leche and pork fat in the best possible way. There’s counter seating if you’re in a rush and plenty of tables if you have time to sit and people-watch.
Price is fair for an airport (entrees $14–$19, café con leche under $4), and the quality far exceeds what you’ll find at any chain spot in the terminal.
If you have even 30 minutes to spare in Concourse D, do yourself a favor and eat here. It’s not just “good for an airport.” It’s straight-up excellent Cuban food that stands toe-to-toe with the flagship on SW 8th Street. La Carreta remains undefeated.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ “Feels like home”
This place is magic. It makes me feel like I’m at home — at my grandparents’ home — even though they’ve already passed away. The people here are surreal; they remind me of how we South Americans used to be — warm, caring, and genuine.
There’s a guy who clears the tables and keeps an eye on everyone like an uncle “Julio” , and it almost brought me to tears. But that’s not even the best part…
The food is amazing — truly comforting, homemade flavors. This place deserves more than 5 stars! And the prices are really, really good. I’d much rather have this kind of grandma-style meal than any sandwich. So far, it’s the only place in the U.S. where I’ve happily paid the service fee, because they really do serve you with heart.
Thank you so much!
