We enjoyed every dish, from the handwritten menu to the quality, flavors, and beautiful presentation. Each plate felt like a piece of art and reflected a deep respect for Japanese culinary culture.
I dare say you don’t need to travel to Japan for truly authentic Japanese food, you can find the same level of quality at Kuroki.
And you can really feel how much heart Ray and Christine put into this small yet intimate restaurant. We loved chatting with them, and Ray san has an incredible breadth of knowledge on so many topics.
We will definitely return the next time we are in Vancouver.
Enjoyed many courses of carefully chosen dishes that are beautifully plated. Definitely worth a try and you’ll enjoy it!
The restaurant is quite intimate, so you should make reservations beforehand to make sure you have a table. Note that there is plenty of street parking for dinner, especially outside of the busy summer seasons.
Chef Ray and Christine made our anniversary dinner very special! Will definitely visit again, indeed I already made my next reservation
Ray took extra care to explain the concepts behind each dish and the meal as a whole. We learned so much about Japanese culture and cuisine. Every dish was balanced very well, and there was definitely enough quantity to feel satisfied in the end. Even with so much Japanese food around Vancouver already, I was introduced to many new flavors and ingredients.
I would 100% recommend them if you want a very personable experience!
After including the base menu, extra charges, tax, and the non refundable 50 percent pre authorization deposit per person required at booking, the total came to over 300 dollars per person. The ingredients and execution did not feel particularly premium or special.
I have traveled extensively throughout Japan and tried many traditional dishes there. Based on that experience, the flavours were restrained and did not taste particularly authentic to Japanese cuisine, especially for a restaurant presenting itself as a kaiseki experience. This was made more noticeable by the chef repeatedly emphasizing that the restaurant uses the most premium and best ingredients, claims that the food did not reflect.
In traditional Japanese dining culture, humility is a core value and chefs let the food speak for itself. The self promotion and criticism of other Japanese restaurants felt unnecessary and did not match the experience. I hope the restaurant considers aligning its presentation and claims more closely with the quality and authenticity of the food.
This was not a bad meal, but at this level of pricing, good service and nice presentation alone are not enough. The value simply is not there.
I just don’t understand how I paid $220 after tips and taxes and there wasn’t a single premium sashimi. There’s plenty of other omakase that’s cheaper but have premium items on the menu.
And honestly most of the food was mostly bland. The only thing I really enjoyed was chawanmushi and the desert. The grilled dish for the day was cod and it tasted frozen. It was tough and firm, not soft and buttery like how cod normally taste.
Left very unsatisfied and disappointed on just the food. But the service and atmosphere was great.
During dinner, chef asked if we liked uni. I told him my gf loves it and she’s visiting from out of town. We were presented with an uni dish/add on. At no point were we asked if we wanted it. At no point were we told we would be charged after receiving it. I thought it was a gift. I never asked/ordered it.
The additional charge was $50, not that it’s a huge amount in the grand scheme. But I felt wronged and cheated.
