My husband and I love Kuro Japanese Pizza at The LAB. It’s honestly the best pizza we’ve had in Orange County—thin, crispy crust, super flavorful, not too much cheese, just perfect.
I don’t know why it’s not busy on weekdays because this place deserves more customers. I hope they never close—I would miss this pizza so much. Highly recommend everyone try it!

We ordered the Nacho & the margarita pizza. We were told 15 minutes so we wandered looking at the other shops. In less than 15 minutes the very friendly staff found us and gave us our pizza. The crust is unique; very light, chewy yet crisp, possibly with some wheat flour. I appreciate they keep their menu short, simple & strict. I’d go back again.

Such a great hole in the wall pizza place. The owners were so kind and the pizzas were even better! We ordered the Thomas and the Nico. Thomas tasted like an upscale deconstructed pasta and the Nico was so decadent with all the herb flavors blending nicely. Saw one comment that the pizzas are oily and lack of cheese, but that’s clearly intentional given the price point and high end ingredients. The olive oil they sprinkle on the pizza is perfect for dipping your flaky crust.

You have to stop by and give this hidden pizza joint a try. The crust is thin and crunchy at the center and nice a thick at the end. Really good flavor and surprisingly different from anything else I’ve tried. Our Margarita pizza came out first and I like that he didn’t keep it sitting while we waited for the Thomas. Our Thomas came out 5 min later and that one was my favorite. I will definitely be back to try the other ones. Highly recommend

It’s a great new place. Perfect for the lab. Wish I could give 4.5 stars. Good, I would say, “Japanese Italian” style pizza. Traditional Italian flavor with Japanese design. It’s light pizza, ideal to split with a friend for a quick bite. Price was about $15-$20 for a pie, which is good, but I could easily crush one by myself and still have room for more. I got the margherita and the nacho pizza (with small slices of jalapeño, sausage, and a little honey).
The service was terrific. They gave me plenty of advice on what to order and were eager to customize the amount of toppings to my liking. The gentleman at the front desk even ran my pizzas over to bootleggers, where I went to grab a beer while waiting. What a guy!
(Oh there’s no indoor seating. It’s all to-go. But like I said, it’s perfect for the set up there in the lab)
At this time it’s still the soft opening so hours are limited, but find a time that fits for you, and go check it out! Support an exciting, new, local spot.

17$ for an oily flatbread that had barely any cheese. Asked the owner for recommendation she said the nico was most popular its literally just cheese oil n some herbs. Store was cute but also trying too hard to be different”. Very punk core but OWNED by japanese people .. says on signs “were not chicago style eat it folded or with a fork” but theres no toppings and even pizzas w meat they give u nothing. What is there to fold all the oil in your mouth? its like ridiculously overpriced and not worth it. theres far better food in the lab or anywhere else. Disappointed.

It was not bad… but it was not good either. We ordered the Nico and the Margherita. The flavors were not balanced, and the dough by itself tasted liked flatbread. Limited options. Vegetarian options available, no vegan ones.

Japanese meticulousness on America’s favorite Italian food!
Located inside the Lab in Costa Mesa fits the overall vibe. With hanging glass skulls for entry light fixtures and the overall blackened darkness vibe of a headshop. Kuro Artisanal Pizza sports a fun vibe of where dark witchcraft meets Southern Italy, interpreted by a Japanese. It is a small shop, but on entry, I knew it was nothing like any other pizza joint.
The food was excellent! Ingredients are of good quality. And the pizza crust was baked just right: not too mushy or overly crispyt or burned. It also had a crispy chewy texture.
I would highly recommend Kuro’s for pizza and the surrounding vibe of the Lab.

Great experience all around here! We love the Lab concept and have been wanting to try Kuro for a while. Finally got the chance today. It was about a 25 minute wait for a Nacho, and they got pretty busy in that time. When it came out, the chef was worried about a hole in the pizza and offered to make it right however he could. He ended up bringing us some cream puffs and other pastry desserts that were simply sublime. The pizza still tastes wonderful as well! We really appreciate the gesture and loved our visit as a whole. Can’t wait to return and try all the other combos over time.
