Social Profile:

Kumagoro was started by Itsuro Tamaki 41 years ago in 1978 with the mission to bring Japanese cuisine to The Last Frontier. Focusing on traditional Japanese cuisine the way it should be served with fresh seafood, delicious rice dishes, and traditional ramen. In 2019, Kumagoro went under new ownership. Itsuro still visits regularly to support the restaurant. New owners Jennifer Choi and Steve Lee now run the day-to-day operations. They continue to focus on balancing a good hybrid of traditional Japanese food and also have introduced new dishes to suite the Anchorage community.

Classic Japanese fare served in a humble spot with baskets of plants hanging from its high ceilings.

Wide menu with options for any taste. We have been twice, one for dinner and other for lunch. The portions are generous and food delicious. Very clean but not fancy, with young people and family tables.

First time trying this place and I loved everything about it. We went close to it’s opening time so it was pretty quiet but very quaint. The staff was super fast and friendly. We ordered salmon nigiri and vegetable fried rice and both were some of the best I’ve had in Anchorage. The fish to rice ratio for the nigiri is insane and I can say it’s really good because it makes you appreciate how fresh and tasty the fish is; I prefer nigiri with more fish to rice ratio. I will be back again soon!

Staff was delightful and the restaurant was a perfect spot for a quiet dinner. Excellent service. The miso soup had a rich umami flavor unlike most in the lower 48. The hamachi was amazing! The sushi rolls were flavorful. This would be a regular spot for me if I lived in Anchorage.

This was very disappointing. The ramen broth was basically soy sauce and water. The roasted pork was so dry that it felt like cardboard. The Yakitori was not grilled but pan-fried with generic store bought teriyaki sauce. The salmon used to make the sushi looked and tasted so sad… the only good thing was the service. Our server was super friendly and very welcoming.

The food tasted pretty good. We got a roll, a bowl, ramen, and some nigiri. The presentation was beautiful. The waitress tried her best to serve everyone and take phone orders, but she definitely could use another set of hands to help out.

I was excited to try this based on other reviews and pictures. We were informed upon ordering that they had none of the sushi specials on their board or any sushi or sashimi at all. We were able to order rolls which were good. What kind of “sushi” restaurant has no sushi? The place was also completely empty. Incredibly disappointing and cannot recommend. Maybe the curry is good?

What an awesome experience. Friendly staff, quick service and overall fun setting. I wasn’t sure about sushi in downtown Anchorage (reviews were better in midtown), but I am so glad I came in for everything described above. Will definitely stop by on my next trip through Anchorage and i would recommend for you to do the same.

Fantastic food and great service. Wonderful spot for many occasions, whether it be gatherings, dates, or even a quick bite. The staff is courteous and prompt, as well as attentive to their tables for needs like drink refills and such. The atmosphere was quiet when I went, making it a great venue for conversation.
