If you scanned the code on the windows before entering, you could see the menus online. We preferred the laminated menus that Melissa gave us. She was pleasant and quick. Drinks came right out, and meals shortly after.
Niece had the open faced turkey sandwich with gravy, cranberry sauce and mashed potatoes. It was too much. She couldn’t finish it. I couldn’t finish my grilled cheese sandwich with ham ($1 more) and fried zucchini sticks (50¢ more). We both enjoyed our home cooked meals, but it was a lot of food. Husband finished his enchiladas, and most of the beans and rice. The chips were overcooked, so we only ate a few of them. Those few had the salsa on them and that salsa was extra spicy.
Melissa brought the credit card reader to our table so we could pay our bill without getting up – very nice. For the three of us, with drinks and tip, each meal averaged $15. Not bad for good food and service!
Put in our order and we were served after several minutes. Did get some chips and salsa. Chips were thick and crisp. Got one little ramekin of salsa, which was odd for two guys of our size. Asked for more because it was quite good and had a little kick, which you could feel on the tongue and lips several minutes after we finished them.
I ordered the southern chicken which was the waitresses selection. There was souch to choose from, I figured asking her would give me the chance of something that was alright. The chicken was ok and almost moist. Tad dry. Had some good flavors on it, but overall was okay. Probably give that a 5-6. The rice was alright, about the same, maybe a 5. The veggies tasted like they came from a frozen bag and were just not edible. Rating them a 0 (zero).
My buddy had the steak and enchiladas. He informed me the enchiladas were dry, the steak was awful and his rice was blah. He did like the refried beans though.
Chips and salsa we’re good. Wish the rest of it was as good as the other reviewers.
Overall, in good conscience, I can’t see going back or recommending the place.
The restaurant has only two cooks and they have to drive in from well out of town. Wait staff, kitchen crew, and the owner were being tasked to extremes to stay open even though the restaurant seemed to have plenty of customers. Like me, many were traveling Interstate 10 and needed a good meal in order to carry on down the highway. It breaks my heart to see good people like these struggling to keep a traditional restaurant open, or for any small, local business for that matter.
I see it everywhere I travel these days, however this was my first exact rendezvous with a business closing like this. As I handed my waitress a $50 bill as a tip upon leaving, she said, “You’re gonna make me cry”. I responded with tears in my eyes, “You deserve it and it will help you remember this day”.
Been looking for tasty chicken fried steak and oh LAWDY LAWD did I ever find it!! Beautifully seasoned, rich creamy sauce with just the right amount of pepper to taste. Fries asked for crispy and they were perfectly done. Ice cream was out of this world yummy
Was in the middle of lunch rush and everything came out within short wait and food was hot.
