The staff was genuinely friendly and welcoming, even with the weather turning ugly. That part of the experience stood out. The food itself was solid, but not exceptional. The ramen noodles were exactly what you’d expect from a competent ramen shop—good broth, decent texture, nothing disappointing.
Where things fell short were the protein-forward dishes. The chicken wings were overcooked to the point of being uncomfortably hard, and the teriyaki steak, while well-seasoned, was tough from overcooking. Overall, Kozue is a dependable option for convenience and warmth on a cold night, but not a place I’d go out of my way to visit.
I’m not a food connoisseur, so I would appreciate photos to assist with ordering, although I’ve come a time before and received great direction from a server. The online ordering platform doesn’t include as many details and can be difficult to order from.
The koroke, and gyoza was great.
As a loyal, long-time customer who has visited this restaurant many times, I have always been delighted with the fantastic food quality and attentive service. This establishment has consistently been a favorite. However, my most recent visit involved a disappointing and confusing billing issue that needs to be addressed.
Last Sunday, we dined as a group of four adults and a 5 years old child. The dishes we ordered were delicious, perfectly prepared, and the service staff was friendly and prompt. The core experience of dining here remains top-notch.
When I received the check, I did not notice that a 20% mandatory gratuity had been silently added to the bill, allegedly because we were a “large group.” Four adults and one child cannot be considered a group large enough for an automatic gratuity. More importantly, we were not informed by the staff beforehand that this charge would be applied.
Due to the lack of communication, I proceeded to add an additional 15% tip on the total, effectively paying a nearly 39% gratuity to the restaurant. I only discovered this error today upon reviewing my receipt.
This is a major oversight. I urge the management to:
Review their policy regarding what constitutes a “large group” (5 people including a child should not qualify).
Mandate clear staff communication to customers whenever a mandatory gratuity is applied.
While I highly value the quality of the dining experience, this deceptive billing practice is deeply disappointing and has damaged my trust. I hope this is corrected promptly, as I would love to continue supporting a restaurant that otherwise excels in all other areas.
Came back for their new yakitori menu and the yakitori were delicious. Now it’s my top 2 Japanese restaurants in town.
