Had the Premium Sashimi Flight ($39) with salmon, mackerel, tuna, tako, and hamachi. All fresh and tasty. Also had the Clam Miso ($6.95), Spinach Gomae ($6.95), and the Imperial roll ($16.95) with salmon, tuna, and avocado topped with unagi and tobiko.
They have skewers here and we tried the Green Onion Yakitori ($8.25), Oyster Motoyaki ($7.5), and Chicken Skin ($7.75). All of the skewers were well prepared. Wish there were more places that did yakitori in Vancouver.
Finally, we had Koto’s Assorted Oden ($12.25) which was very warming to our stomachs.
Overall, I would definitely come back for more skewers and to try some of their other menu items.
The mentaiko udon was definitely my favorite – super rich and flavorful, and the little pops of roe in every bite were so satisfying. The noodles were chewy and cooked just right.
The chawanmushi (steamed egg) was amazing too – silky smooth with shrimp and salmon roe on top, which added a nice depth of flavor. So comforting when it’s warm!
The agedashi tofu had a great texture – they used firm tofu with a crispy outside and soft center, and the savory sauce brought everything together.
We also had the eel sushi roll, which was perfectly balanced – not too sweet, and the eel had a nice charred flavor.
And big shout-out to the staff – super kind and attentive. The whole dining experience felt cozy and welcoming. Definitely coming back!
For my tastes, I felt like it was a little pricey. It seems like they have very good deals for Sunday and Thursday for sashimi platters. I missed out! On regular days, I felt that the price for the sashimi was “not worth it”. We ordered the salmon sashimi and felt like the cuts were uneven.
California roll was small, but had real crab meat so was a definite bonus. Their Hokke was the standout for us, with the fried cheese chikuwa being the least good. Tempura was as expected! My parents found the rice in the Mentaiko fried rice a little hard.
The service was amazing though. They were attentive and came to refill our tea and water all the time so it was very nice. I also thought it was so nice that they didn’t charge you extra for tea! I always feel like it’s a given at a Japanese place so it’s so great! Bonus in my books.
The insider decor is very cute and lovely! The tables are all booth style unless you sit in front of the chefs (which I think would be a cool experience but I didn’t try it). The tables are small so if you have a bigger person in your party, it might be a little uncomfortable. We came in as a group of 5 and they were very accommodating and sat us with a chair!
If you want to sit in a Japanese style room to eat as a group (seems more spacious), there is a minimum spend of $300. They let us know when they offered to us and gave us the choice. Very nice!
I recently dined here with my friend and was incredibly impressed by the quality of the food and service. We tried Tuna Tataki, Old fashioned roll, Matcha ice cream and pudding. Everything was beyond delicious. Thanks Jimmy for the excellent service! We will be back… highly recommend!!
