Konpa Nikkei

  4.8 – 44 reviews   • Seafood restaurant

Nestled in the heart of Corona Del Mar, Konpa is Chef Jason Yamaguchi’s latest culinary venture. Inspired by his Japanese heritage and extensive travels throughout Peru, Yamaguchi creates his distinctive interpretation of Nikkei cuisine using seasonal ingredients sourced from both origins. Traditionally, Peruvian ceviche is made with fresh fish marinated in lemon juice, accompanied by onion, chili, and cilantro. In the Nikkei version, Japanese elements such as soy sauce ginger and sesame oil are incorporated, adding new nuances of flavor and aroma to the classic dish.

This place is AMAZING!! We got the Aji and Nikkei peruvian poke bowls, both of which were so flavorful and filling but clean and healthy at the same time. The sashimi was so fresh and buttery. I was surprised at how tasty the quinoa was too!! We brought our poke bowls to go to Inspiration Point by the beach. The perfect view with delicious food. It was so good that we left the bowl empty and clean.

This place is absolutely phenomenal! I’m so happy to see that it’s opened and here in town. The qualities is rich. It’s soft. The salmon melted in my mouth. The bowl was delicious. Very well curated perfect amount of greens. I asked for that chili sauce on the side and it was phenomenal too. Everything was very quick service at the bar very personal. It was very clean. I will definitely be back every single week trying something new. I treated my stuff to a couple of other hand roll options and they absolutely loved it too.

Konpa Nikkei is heaven in Corona Del Mar. The space is intentionally designed with a long, welcoming bar that encourages conversation and connection. You feel it right away in the way the team works—talented, warm, and proud to serve some of the freshest, butteriest fish I’ve had in a long time. Finally, something truly unique in the heart of CDM.

I started with the escabeche spice pickled carrots and onions—perfect crunch, bright flavor, fresh and addictive. Then came the life-changing pickles, and they really lived up to their name. Layered with ginger and a sprinkle of ume plum, every bite had depth and balance.

For entrées, the coliflor was a standout. A bed of greens topped with Japanese mushrooms, Latin squash, and a medley of vegetables that brought spice, richness, and comfort. It reminded me of a Caesar but healthier, layered, and more flavorful—it’s a dish I’d come back for regularly. We also tried the aji poke bowl with kimchi and tuna, and the fish was buttery and clean, lifted beautifully by the spice and crunch.

The sushi-style wrap was unforgettable. We had the salmon, paired with pickled cabbage, avocado, and their Aji Verde Crema, which bursts with cilantro and jalapeño. This is the dish I’d recommend if you order nothing else—memorable, balanced, and absolutely delicious.

We ended with the yuzu cheesecake, light and fluffy with just the right citrus lift to close out a fresh, vibrant meal. Service was standout throughout, and the manager’s warmth made the evening feel personal. I left loving not just the food, but the vibe—thoughtful, connected, and unlike anywhere else in the area.

A special shoutout to Jason Yamasaki, the chef owner, who was awesome to talk with. He is truly talented with a passion for food, educating and surprising his customers with amazing flavors.

5 star experience and quality at Corona Del Mar’s newest fish spot. Japanese + Peruvian + Hawaiian flavors with very fresh fish. Fair prices and portions. Food was light but filling. Tucked just off of PCH and conveniently has a parking lot in the back. Manager, Drew, was friendly and knowledgeable about all the food which was helpful for it being our first visit here. Easily a 5/5 – we will definitely be back!

You absolutely need to try this restaurant!! This is the best quality fish in Orange County. We ordered online for pick up because we would be arriving close to when they closed, but when we arrived Chris welcomed us to sit and enjoy our food there. The service was great — Chris was very attentive to us & so kind. They get daily shipments of fish, nothing is ever frozen. The miso soup & pickles were so full of flavor.
We can’t wait to come back (probably today…). 100000/10!!!!

Konpa Nikkei is such a cool spot! The vibe is modern but relaxed and the menu is great.

I had the Sol wrap and while it was fresh and tasty, I found myself wishing there was a little more fish inside (but that’s everyone’s dream). The sauces were so good: aji amarillo, rocoto shoyu, and verde crema each added their own flavor and it was fun to try them all. I just wished there was a spicier option to kick it up a notch.

Service was awesome. Even though we came about 40 minutes before closing, the staff was kind, welcoming, and did not rush us at all.

Overall, Konpa Nikkei is worth checking out if you want something different from the usual sushi spots. Fresh flavors, great sauces, and genuinely good service make it a place I would return to, hopefully next time with a spicier sauce and a little more fish in the wrap.

Stumbled upon this place after spending the day at crystal cove and it was such a pleasant surprise! Drew from Konpa was so welcoming and told us all about the ingredients and creation of the restaurant in detail, which added to our experience. Made it feel so special and intimate! The fish was so fresh and the flavors were delicious. The chicha morada agua fresca is also my new favorite. Drove down from LA and already thinking about coming back next week. 🙂
