Food at Komala Vilas truly feels like home-cooked food. We visited on a Friday and ordered the thali, which included onion sambar, potato curry, kottu, and sweet pongal. The number of side dishes is limited, but you can ask for refills or additional sides, rice, and sambar.

We asked for ghee and were happily served extra sambar and rice. I ended up eating like I did in my 20s! The experience genuinely made me feel like I was back home. Tamil songs were playing in the background, which added to the nostalgic atmosphere.

There isn’t a lot of variety on the menu, but the food is simple, decent, and tastes good. Overall, it’s a comforting place if you’re looking for a homely South Indian meal

Have been to Komala Vilas a few times and I felt the place was an ok-ok. The place is not bad but you won’t miss this place if you don’t eat here.

I tried Mysore Masala Dosa here and Coffee and it was alright. Not bad quality at all but it was kind of bland. I also felt the same when I had tried Utthapam here earlier.

The lady at the counter was very polite and courteous. Kudos to her for her high service standard. The restaurant was spacious (I had gone here with a colleague from work, I normally prefer eating at home) and well kept. There was a clean restroom.

Overall, not a bad place.

Uttapam was very thick – could be thinner and more toppings. Rava dosa was perfect! They could expand their menu with some vegan options or variants of the menu!

A South Indian Gem that outshines Michelin-Star restaurants. Every visit wakes up all your senses: the aroma of freshly tempered spices, the vibrant colors, the comforting sizzle, and flavors that feel both nostalgic and unforgettable.

The food is always fresh, consistently great, and prepared with real care. It never disappoints — not once. On top of that, the service is quick, efficient, and genuinely warm. And for the quality you get, the price is unbeatable.

What surprises me most is how underrated this restaurant is within the Bay Area’s vast dining scene. With the incredible food, quick service, and excellent value, it absolutely deserves far more recognition.

If you’re craving authentic South Indian food that delivers every single time — this is the place. A must-visit.

Loved the food! It’s great ingredients, feel good taste that fills your heart. No frills place that values no or low waste looking at no single use plastic. Asked for some additional chutney and they happily obliged. Will come back again before heading home to the East coast.

I think I found a great new spot for Dosa in Santa Clara. Very reasonably priced for fresh and delicious South Indian vegetarian food.

The lunch special is a steal for $14.50, and it’s UNLIMITED!

Loved the fresh Drumsticks in the Sambhar, absolutely delicious.

The lady at the counter taking your order was very kind and friendly.

A Sunnyvale Vegetarian Gem
We have been visiting this restaurant for 20+ years, and their dedication to quality shines through. Their tiffins, including the crispy dosas and fluffy idlis, and the comprehensive South India meals (thali) are the undisputed highlight of their menu, offering tremendous variety and flavor. The dinner a la carte menu also has great options to choose from, offering variety beyond the traditional. They also sell delicious, authentic South Indian snacks and sweets, perfect for taking home.

Definitely, this is one of the must-eats in Sunnyvale for vegetarians, consistently delivering that comforting, homemade food taste we all crave. They can get busy during peak hours, but generally, the food quality and attentive service are big hits with us. Kudos to their management and the kitchen staff for maintaining their exceptional standards all these years!

The food is decent and service is also quick. The idly and vada was average any other South Indian place. Idly wasn’t fresh but the Sambar was tasty. The one dish I would recommend is Upma along with filter coffee. They make it in Ghee.

This is my go to place for South Indian Breakfast, specially on Weekends. So far they have not disappointed me. I pretty much like all the stuff on their breakfast menu. Combos are pretty good. Onion Chilli uttapam and Rava dosas are great. Idli & Vada are pretty good as well. Highly recommend this place. There are very few restaurants serve great breakfast, this is definitely one of them.

My first time visiting a local south Indian restaurant and learned so much about their cuisine. South Indian cuisine is all vegetarian. It appears they specialize in dosas and sambhar.

The mansala dosa was large but a bit soft but the crispy type which was still delicious and soaked up the 3 types of sauces and a soup. They have a different daily thali or variety set of 6 dishes which was also very good and includes white rice. Kapoori was also very tasty fried puffy goodness especially with the sambhar and potatoes.

I’m sure I committed some native eating etiquette by using a spoon to eat as well as my left hand so I hope I didn’t attract too many side glances by other customers. Service was exceptionally friendly and the server stopped by several times to bring refills of our dishes which I wasn’t sure was customary like Korean bon chon or because we were the only non Indian customers but certainly appreciated and took advantage of their generosity. Highly recommend and will certainly be back!
