Kaiseki craving satisfied! Ko Japanese Dining, a family-owned restaurant serving authentic Japanese fare in Dupont Circle might just be our new favorite. Mom Mikki is head chef, her daughter is sous chef, her older son is the bartender, and her younger son runs the front of the house. Exquisite food and impeccable service!

Six-course kaiseki menu:
▪︎ Platter of small plates (tamago with unagi, caramelized pork belly, shrimp dumpling with lotus root, braised beef with potatoes and veggies, squid salad, and pickled veggies)
▪︎ Assorted sashimi (tuna, fatty tuna, yellowtail, and seafood bream)
▪︎ Chawan mushi (savory egg custard)
▪︎ Melt-in-your-mouth grilled wagyu
▪︎ Tempura shrimp, squid and seasonal veggies served with rice and miso soup
▪︎ Vanilla ice cream with macha sauce

Wonderful spot for outstanding and authentic Japanese food! I visited Ko Japanese Dining with a couple friends for a Saturday morning brunch after another friend told us it was the best Japanese food she ever had in DC. It absolutely lived up to the hype! It was pretty quiet when we arrived, so we had our pick of seats; we selected a spot next to a window where we could overlook the rest of Dupont. It was cozy and simple, and the food was outstanding.

I got the grilled mackerel, which included two beautifully grilled fillets with a side of miso soup, rice, and diced radish. The fish was remarkably fresh and super tender, and it was super flavorful on its own but also paired well with the soy sauce and sides of radish or lemon. They offer two different types of mackerel (white and blue), and I ended up getting the saba / blue mackerel at the server’s recommendation. My friends sampled their spicy salmon roll, shiromi fry (fried fish), and oyakodon, all of which were outstanding. The spicy salmon roll was simple but well-executed, with super fresh fish and a great kick of spice. The shiromi fry was perfect, with the super tender, flaky fish encased in an addictively crispy and slightly salty shell. The oyakodon was incredibly tender and flavorful, and it both looked and felt like pure comfort in a bowl. The menu is a smidge pricey, but the portions are really generous and the everything is crafted with precision and care.

Super authentic Japanese food. I’ve been looking around DC for good Japanese comfort food. The Katsudon I had here was one of the best I’ve had. It’s definitely a little pricey for Katsudon but the quality is fantastic. Very fluffy egg and the Katsu was cooked perfectly. It is very comparable to what I got in Japan.
Only surprise was a $2 “egg surcharge”. Wish they would just raise the price on the menu. Not a huge deal but just be prepared to pay an extra $2 for dishes containing egg. The waiter let me know as I ordered so it wasn’t a surprise.

We had an amazing dinner at Ko! The yuzu margarita was so good (and you can also get it at happy hour). We started with the salmon and spicy tuna sushi – which was served with REAL wasabi (a much welcome surprise) – the fish was fresh and wonderful. The main entrees can take a bit longer to come out, but well worth the wait. I got the tempura set and my partner got the chicken katsudon. Both came with miso soup which was not your typical miso soup – it was filled with plenty of vegetables. The tempura set had a mix of shrimp, inoki mushrooms (my absolute favorite), and other vegetables. The tempura was so light and fluffy, it was perfectly battered and not heavy at all. My partner loved the katsudon, it was very flavorful and filling. Our server Chris was an absolute delight – this is my second time here and I don’t write reviews often but would recommend everyone try this place out and show them some love!

I was really surprised to find a teishoku (Japanese set meal) restaurant in DC, let alone one that has a sukiyaki set. New York has one but it never caught on in DC. This style of food feels more like the food I ate in Japan. Really authentic and comforting food. I can’t wait to try different menu items and plan to visit again! Eyeing that tempura set next 🙂

Wonderful, authentic Japanese restaurant in the heart of DC. It’s on the second floor above a Thai restaurant. The space is quite large with a small bar as well. It’s clean and servers/managerial staff are very polite.

The tempura here is absolutely authentic. I would come back just for this. Their sushi is also very fresh and tasty. Prices are very reasonable and I’ll be back to try more dishes here.

We had a fantastic experience from start to finish. The food was authentic, beautifully presented, and full of real Japanese flavor. Every dish felt carefully prepared and balanced, from the simple miso tomatoes to perfectly grilled mackerel set to the flavorful oyakodon.

The atmosphere was warm and calm, perfect for our anniversary dinner. Our server was excellent, very attentive, kind, and genuinely thoughtful.

Thank you to the Ko team for making our night so special. We will absolutely be back!

Ko Japanese Dining in Washington DC is an absolute gem! The chef’s meticulous attention to detail is evident in every dish, showcasing authentic Japanese flavors that transport you straight to Tokyo. The sushi is fresh, the ramen is rich and savory, and each plate is a work of art. We loved the crisp and delicate tempura crab, fried to perfection. Highly suggest you try it if you can, but it’s only seasonal so ask them. The unagi don was also so delicious (tender eel over rice). And the oyakodon offered the kind of home-style warmth. Also highly highly recommend —the fried eggplant with cheese – forgot the name. Even the dessert was great, we tried a delightful red bean taiyaki, perfect outside with just the right sweetness inside.

The homey environment adds to the charm, making it a perfect spot for a cozy and satisfying meal. The staff is friendly and attentive, ensuring a wonderful dining experience. If you’re craving genuine Japanese cuisine, Ko Japanese Dining is the place to go. Highly recommended!
