I moved towards the mountains during COVID and come back occasionally and today, I was so excited bcs I had extra time to stop and give the place a try, in its new location, under the new ownership.
*le sigh* When I walked in and wasn’t punched in the face w the same scent that came out of Kevin’s kitchen, I should’ve known. The Nasi Goreng is not the Malaysian style Nasi I came to love deeply. At best, it’s a Chinese style fried rice, an ok and EXPENSIVE one but if I wanted Chinese fried rice, I’d go to a Chinese restaurant. The sambal they serve it with is a Thai style sweet sambal, not the throat punching Malaysian sambal Id mix into the already exceptionally flavorful Nasi Goreng ala Kevin. I love that for my Crab Rangoon I get at a Thai place but not at Kedai. They say there are anchovies in it but they taste more like minows, which is whatever. I’m pretty bummed. I did get my wife the roti and I haven’t tried it yet but I wont get my hopes up when she comes home and I get to try a bite.
So the place is… fine. It used to be exceptional and deserved people lining up 30-45min prior to opening. It’s not that anymore. If you haven’t been since the new ownership resurrected it, know they resurrected it in name, with the benefit of having years of stellar reviews when Kevin and Alysson ran it, but it is NOT that anymore. The Paseo resurrection was better executed than this, tho I still prefer Un Bien but… that’s for a diff review.
Stumbled upon this killer Malaysian restaurant while visiting from out of town, and now I’m so sad I live so far away! This was one of the most memorable food experiences I’ve had in a long while.
The space is large with a bar up top and more table set on a lower level. We walked past the kitchen on the way to our seats and we knew then we were about to taste something new.
We over order but didn’t regret trying the roti with a chickpea curry, village style fried rice, chicken wings, and Laska Lemak curry noodles with prawns for two people. It was a LOT of food, and very fair prices so a great value for sure.
The curry noodles and chicken wings were my best bites. With the chicken being perfectly crispy on the outside but so moist and tender on the inside. Be careful not to add too much chili to your curry as it got hot fast we only needed a tiny pinch to get the flavor with some heat.
Service was very good but not overly attentive, and there were so kind to explain the difference in flavors.
We skipped out of drinks here but they had a fun selection.
Will definitely be making my way back here next time I’m in town.
