I ordered their Chicken Katsu Sando Meal and Cheese Ball. The bento box itself looks appealing, with sections for pickles, salads, sesame balls, and mac and cheese. The chicken katsu itself tasted alright, but its flavor was a bit plain. The mac and cheese was interesting since it had a wasabi taste that was a surprise.

Small unassuming entrance. You order at the kiosk at the front (there’s one for a Korean restaurant here too) and then sit. There has not been a line or a lot of people inside the times I’ve been for dinner on a weeknight. Good vibes if you just want to eat alone after work one day. Good amount of tables and chairs and self service water.
The food doesn’t come out super fast but that’s because they have a ton of takeout and delivery orders. But it is pretty yummy and good quantity. I’ll keep coming.

Everything was so good. Full of flavors and meat was so juicy. Portion was good. I would definitely order again.

Coming back from a trip to Tokyo, I realized that I’d forgotten to get one of the famed katsu sandos. Not easy to find here if you don’t want something that came out the fridge at Nijiya. This place didn’t disappoint. Got the katsu sando, with a optional kinda bento thing (mac salad, Japanese pickles). Katsu was nice and thick, bread was nice and thin. Mac salad noodles were properly firm. It’s also a welcome find in that area of Market St. which mostly has boring office-lunch places. Looks like they just added tteokbokki to their menu, which is easier to find in general — but definitely not in that area. Ordering is on a kiosk, but they will give you table service. Tip accordingly, LOL.

If you’re in SF and craving katsu, you must try Katsuya. I had the cheese katsu and it was absolutely delicious — crispy on the outside, super juicy inside, and that melted cheese… perfection! On top of that, the owner was incredibly kind and welcoming. You can really feel the care they put into their food and service. I’ll definitely be coming back. Highly recommend!

Tried chicken katsu – good curry and rice. I liked it pretty much. I was really impressed with the quantity. Pretty generous in my opinion. The place offers 2 menu – one Japanese and another one chinese. It is a mix of self service kinda place – you take your own water, order through a kiosk machine etc. so can’t really comment on the service.

Conveniently located in FiDi and sharing the space with another eatery, Katsuya is a solid option for lunch or dinner. On my last visit I ordered online for pickup on my way home from my class. I arrived a bit early so it wasn’t ready yet, but np – since it was near the end of the day there were plenty of seats inside to wait. There were a few people dining in, but even more coming through for takeout and delivery – staff were bustling about too, which is usually a good sign.
Prices seem to have gone up over the years (IIRC they used to be in a different location), but the portions are generous. My husband and I typically share a tonkatsu sando meal and it’s still plenty for the both of us.

i was shookETH. i got a whole bento box when i THOUGHT i just purchased the sando.
service/employees were nice! moderate wait time during lunch hours (15 mins wait time, ordered in person) sooooo–
i’ll tell u what i love:
-the aesthetics. this sandwich and the sides are gorgeous. it’s too beautiful to eat even.
-the unexpected sides/bento box. i know i was paying 17$ (cries curse you inflation) for a sandwich but i didn’t know i also got sides with it !! the sides really compliment the sandwich as well as gives a variety of texture and flavor profiles which helps spice up the eating experience. i don’t like salads but i think it’s good to have since a lot of the sides n sandwich can be sooo heavy.
-the miso soup + mac salad + sesame balls with spicy sauce. i think the sandwich can get cold fast and most of the sides are cold, so having the soup heals the soul. their mac salad is solid and the balls are so unique! it’s more chinese in my opinion, as the insides are white paste–which i love and the sauce compliment the balls nicely.
-very filling. i had to force half of the sandwich, all mac salad, 3/4 balls and drank all the soup (cus i wanted to carry JUST the other half of wich) and i still have so much leftovers of the veggies. i was so stuffed.
what i didn’t like:
-the location. it’s not the best, lowkey sketch and gives a very grimey feeling just being there, so i literally bought the food and went to a park instead :/
-the sandwich itself is very lacklustering. i now understand why they have all the sides, the sandwich’s flavor profile is just dull and nothing from the sando stands out. there are the sauces, but i live by my rule that things should still taste good without adding anything prior. there was a brown sauce, assuming it’s tonkatsu sauce that’s already on the sandwich, and a greenish white one i didn’t try (since i’m sitting on bench in a park). eating it with the soup is my best combo.
tbh, this overall experience was for the gram/is a one time deal, as my biggest qualm with this place is the tasteless, but so aesthetic sandwich. so i won’t frequently patron them unless i’m reaaaally craving them. not bad.

I think they must have moved. The interior photos and store front looks different than the ones from Google. Tonkatsu and Chicken Katsu Sando are both really good. Chicken katsu sando its probably the best in town by now. However, the side dishes are not good and little boring. Its a self service counter here so not really having service provided. The interior over all needs a lot of improvement. Not easy to find parking nearby.

Sorry to taint the otherwise wonderful reviews by everyone else. I am not sure why the fried pork cutlet rice bowl – Katsudon came in a wet bowl of rice with Oyakodon soup base beneath.
