Exceptional Culinary Standards and Freshness
The food at Kanji Sushi is undeniably the star of the show and would easily earn a perfect score on its own. Every dish we ordered featured high-quality ingredients, expert preparation, and beautiful presentation. From the precision of the sushi rolls to the rich, comforting flavors of the ramen, the kitchen team clearly knows what they are doing. The fish tasted incredibly fresh, and the rice was seasoned perfectly, which is the hallmark of a great sushi establishment. If you are a fan of authentic Japanese flavors and are looking for a meal that satisfies your cravings for premium seafood, the menu here will not disappoint. It is rare to find a spot where every single dish hits the mark so consistently in terms of flavor and quality.

⏳ Challenges with Service Speed and Efficiency
Unfortunately, the dining experience was significantly hindered by service that was incredibly slow. What made this particularly surprising—and honestly a bit frustrating—was that the restaurant was pretty empty during our visit. Usually, a lower volume of customers results in faster service, but that wasn’t the case here. We spent a significant amount of time waiting for basic check-ins and for our food to arrive, which disrupted the flow of the evening. It felt as though the front-of-house staff was struggling to keep up with even a minimal number of guests, which is a major area for improvement if they want to match the high standards set by the kitchen.

Inconsistency in Table Management
A major point of contention during our meal was the apparent inconsistency in how the staff handled different tables. We witnessed several other parties who were seated well after us receive their drinks and appetizers much faster than we did. It’s always a bit discouraging as a guest to feel overlooked, especially when you can see the staff serving newer arrivals with more urgency while you are still waiting for your initial order to be acknowledged.

Wait Times: The gap between ordering and eating was much longer than standard for a sushi spot of this size, making it a poor choice for a quick lunch or a timed dinner.

Staff Attentiveness: While the employees were polite enough, they didn’t seem to have a strong grasp of the room’s pacing, leading to long periods where we were left without updates or water refills.

Final Verdict: A Great Meal if You Have Time to Spare
I am settling on a 4-star review for Google because the food was genuinely fantastic, and at the end of the day, that is the most important part of a restaurant visit for me. However, I have to be honest about the fact that the service needs a major overhaul in terms of speed and fairness. I would definitely recommend Kanji Sushi for the flavors alone, but I would caution future diners to only visit when they aren’t on a tight schedule and have plenty of patience. If management can address these logistical hurdles and train the staff to be more observant, this could easily be the best sushi spot in the area.

I ordered through DoorDash, and while the sushi rolls themselves are delicious, the rice has been a consistent issue. This is the second time I’ve ordered from this restaurant, and the rice has been undercooked both times—crunchy when it shouldn’t be. I know how properly cooked sushi rice should taste, and this really takes away from the overall experience. The rolls are on the expensive side, so having poorly cooked rice makes them hard to enjoy, no matter how good the fillings are.

I had a wonderful experience at this sushi restaurant. The flavors were outstanding and everything tasted incredibly fresh. The staff made us feel comfortable and well taken care of from the moment we arrived. It is a place I would gladly return to and recommend to others.

Kanji Sushi and Ramen took over the location of the former Sushi Tomo, which we loved. We have been really happy with the new owners. The staff is so accommodating and nice, the Sushi and orders have been terrific and the atmosphere is very comfortable and welcoming. We have been very happy with dine in or take out.

Food is quite horrible given it has 4.6 stars. Others mention that the reviews are based on experiences had when a prior owner had this place.

My experience was poor in terms of taste of food and service.

Sushi was 50% fresh 50% old. The Spicy Mango Crunch was appealing based on its description, but the execution was terrible. No flavor, no spice, and the mango was some puree that didn’t taste like mango. The rice itself is a low quality sushi rice or perhaps blended with other rice. The house sake is well below the standard of most other places.

The only tasty item was the Uni, which was from Santa Barbara.

My regret is not pushing back to return the items. Instead I wanted it get out of there as fast as possible.

Note: 2 means I’ll never be back and would steer friends away

The food was very tasty, fresh, and everything was clean and well-presented. We really enjoyed it! The place was busy, which shows it’s popular. Unfortunately, the service was quite poor. One of the items we ordered at the beginning never arrived, and one set was brought out incorrectly and then taken away right from our table. We had to wait another 30 minutes for the correct one, so we ended up sharing one set between two people while waiting. That’s a big downside. Hopefully, the service improves in the future because the food itself is excellent.

A simple neighborhood sushi place. We dragged our parents for an early lunch. We ordered soft shell crab and mixed tempura. Crunchy and tasty as expected. Also ordered 4 sushi rolls to share. Good texture and fresh fillings. Nice service, will try other sushi next time. My mom likes the ginger, not so strong and thinly sliced. There is also a nice variety of sushi choices.

To begin, my mom and I have been coming to kanji since they opened, we used to love it. First, we stood there unattended to be seated for 5 minutes. Then when we ordered the waiter told my mom “what do you want lady” after I had just ordered super politely. My mom ordered chicken terayaki, and the chicken we were served was bad. She sent it back only taking and spitting out a bite of one piece of chicken. I ordered my roll, which was made wrong. There were tons of flies (more than any indoor restaurant should ever have). We asked to pay for the roll and the miso we had ordered even though we didn’t eat anything. Instead they charged the chicken as well and only gave a 10% discount which is terrible service. I will note kanji had different waiters and sushi staff before this visit.
