However, when we were leaving, we stopped in the bathroom and were absolutely disgusted by what we saw. There was sewage water all over the bathroom floor, it reeked of sewage, and sandbags were being used to try to absorb the liquid. The floor was wet and visibly contaminated, and it was shocking that they were still operating under these conditions, let alone having people wait an hour and a half for a table.
This was extremely unsanitary and concerning from a health and safety standpoint. I truly hope this gets addressed immediately, because the food and experience are usually great — but this is unacceptable.
I went to the Kani House Woodstock location on 8/24 and ordered the Volcano Roll and Hibachi entree. After just two pieces of the roll, I felt a large foreign object in my mouth and had to spit it out. It was a piece of plastic, easily over 2-3 inches long.
I immediately and politely called the server over and informed them. They took the plate away. And that was it. Common sense says in a situation like this, either the chef or a manager should come out and apologize. Not here. I even hinted to the server multiple times, but nobody cared. The only response I got was, “We gave you a discount.” Really? This isn’t about money, it’s about basic manners and safety.
When the check came, I saw they had applied a 10% discount. So basically, my potential health hazard was WORTH about $5 to them. Unbelievable.
Kani House corporate seriously needs to retrain this location’s management and staff, or at the very least conduct another inspection. I would strongly advise against eating here.
When the chef finally showed up, we calmly expressed our concerns. He responded by laughing in our faces, dismissing us, and then began yelling across the table, calling my husband “belligerent.” It was rude, hostile, and completely unacceptable behavior from someone in a customer-facing role.
The hostess blamed extra allergy prep time, but that didn’t justify the excessive wait or explain why other tables were experiencing the same issue. We ultimately left and went to Volcano down the road, where the service was professional, timely, noticeably cleaner, and they have great deals every Monday and Tuesday. Much better experience overall.
Our server acted annoyed we existed and pressured us to submit the entire order rather than coming back after we ordered apps. No offer to refill or sell another drink despite empties and me making obvious signals during multiple walk bys. Soup and salad never arrived. Entree arrived before any apps. The order for our kids was completely taken wrong (just a simple order of beef fried rice). Our sushi+sashimi “deluxe” was 4 types of sushi salmon, tuna, yellowtail, and escolar.
To top it all off we were served an inexcusable and irresponsible amount of escolar to serve for less than 4 grown adults. Anything beyond a small amount of Escolar will cause severe gastrointestinal distress and disturbances.
I could say more but you get the point.
First off the yum yum sauce was perfect. It was not watered down as in another place we ate at.
The chicken soup was good, better than other places. The steak and chicken were flavorful, seasoned perfectly and very tender. I had shrimp and tilapia to really test the place. They both were delicious and not fishy tasting.
The only negative was the California roll, not as expected. I will avoid next time.
Service was good and the chef engaging with everyone including the children. They were excited about the onion volcano. Good place to go with children!!!
The sherbet and ice cream are a nice finishing touch.
They got the order wrong, the gyozas were literally uncooked, and the sushi looked like it was rolled by someone doing it for the first time. To top it off, they brought the appetizer after we finished eating, and still had the nerve to charge for it.
And then the server chased us down asking for a tip while telling us about his family problems. I’m sorry, but that’s not my responsibility and definitely not how a restaurant should operate.
This place is embarrassing. Save your time, money, and sanity and eat anywhere else.
