The food is unreal. This was the only place in town that we could find uni- and while the market price was steep, it was worth it.

This is such a fun vibe but the food…is even better. If you don’t get the Brussel sprouts you aren’t even living. Any roll I have ever gotten has been perfect. Spicy salmon and Tiger in my top 5 for sure! Walked in on a Friday night at 5 with no reservations but wouldn’t wait any longer than that. She fills up fast.

When several other restaurants seemed to miss the mark for our annual New Years eve dinner, we wandered into Kampai. And boy were we pleasantly surprised; kinda like a hidden gem in an alley. Immediately upon entering a friendly hostess quickly seated us and a waitress Immediately brought menus with water and drink requests quickly following. After reviewing all and asking a few questions we ordered a Saki and cocktail ( both good). For dinner we chose Bento boxes to enjoy their salad, miso soup, sushimi along with shrimp & veggie tempura and steak. Everything was wonderful. Fresh, well prepared , flavorful and nice portions. The waitress was very very attentive and we will be back. Other diners seemed to be enjoying the same. A good way to end this year and start the next.

Food was mediocre, portion sizes are abysmal. 33$ for a Sashimi Deluxe that came with 12~ pieces, no soup. For the prices they charge, they have the audacity to charge you another 4% for non cash payments. You would think it would be included when they charge double the price compared to any other sushi places in CO.
Tldr: Don’t bother, Columbia has much better sushi places to offer for half the price. Only give it a try if you want a good atmosphere and get charged 60$ for some Calamari and a Sashimi deluxe.

On a non-football weekend it was easy to get in right away.
We enjoyed the dumplings, miso soups, crazy roll, and sashimi. The food was good but quite pricey.
This is difficult to describe. When I’ve been to sushi restaurants, there is a certain way everything is presented on the table. A Japanese way if you will. That is, plates go a certain way, any paper or food scraps are promptly removed. The serving custom was more what you may expect from college aged Americans, i.e. here’s your food [places plates haphazardly on table] Not a big deal but just stood out to me. Hey, I was in Missouri and having decent sushi, so I’m not complaining too much.
We enjoyed our meal and the ambience was good. I would likely try somewhere else before returning based on cost.

My husband and I are a bit of “foodies” and not easily impressed and this place was amazing and exceeded every one of our expectations. I am completing all 100 things to do in the book “100 things to do in Columbia, MO before you die”. Alley A is stop 100 and mentions Kampai. So I guess they saved the best for last.
We came right at 5 (yesterday) on a Saturday, right when they opened. It was just us and another table shortly after. We thought it would be packed on a Saturday. Everything was absolutely perfect. It wasn’t freezing in there and the music wasn’t too loud. Our server Olivia was so nice and attentive. Our drinks came fast. Our miso soup was so delicious and not so hot that you couldn’t eat it right away; and only $3. Our sushi was so fresh. We ordered the dragon roll, volcano roll and rainbow roll. We liked them best in that order. I ordered the Brussel sprouts too and they were simply incredible. It was one of the best dinners in Columbia we have had in a long time, if not honestly ever in our 4 years here in COMO. We’re from Kansas City where we have incredible food, especially Asian and sushi and Thai and have had a hard time finding good restaurants in Columbia. We will most definitely be back. We parked in the garage at 10th and Cherry for free and was just a short walk from there. Thank you for providing such amazing service, atmosphere and quality food at an all around reasonable price.

Best sushi in town!!! The servers always made sure my friend and I were doing good and had plenty of sake bombs. I recommend doing the sake bombs they are fun with friends if you are of age. The sushi comes with soy sauce and I recommend asking about their spicy mayo sauce. The pairing with the spicy mayo sauce and the sushi is too good. You really cannot go wrong with any roll you pick. Best place for a dating spot if your significant other likes sushi.
