I make a special trip to Kalmes Restaurant, when I am in the Dubuque, Iowa region. The restaurant has an unpretentious vibe. The server was excellent: friendly and helpful. I had the seafood platter and a chocolate malt (for only $4.00). The platter was were done–four shrimp, four fantail shrimp/prawns, two pieces of cod, and three scallops. The batter on the cod and fantail shrimp/prawn was not too thick, which is my preference. The scallops were grilled. The malt was delicious. The prices, although recently raised, were reasonable. I can’t wait for my next visit.

Had a reservation. Still had to wait almost 30 minutes to get our table. The food was TRASH!! The munchie basket was over cooked to the point that all off the cheese curds no longer had any cheese in them. My two daughter’s both had the jalapeño burgers, which was very over done and dry. My wife and I both had the brosted chicken…. worst fried chicken I have EVER had. So dry and bland. Whoever was in the kitchen last night preparing our food, do yourself and everyone else a favor and find a new career.

Stopped in for a family lunch with about 20 of us after a funeral. They got us seated right away even though we were about a hour early. Menu is enormous anyone should be able to find a choice to try. Enjoyed a nice appetizer combo. Bison burger was good and juicy French fry serving was a little light. Daughter enjoyed her patty melt as well. They also have a dessert selection if you like. Service was fast considering our large group. Lots of photos on the walls of the local historical sights. There is a lot of Luxembourg history in this small town. Two gas pumps outside if you need and a small grocery section inside as well. Good choice if your looking for some good Midwestern fare.

Love this diner/ bar. In the middle of nowhere Iowa yet A LOT of people take the time to drive to it. Salad bar has enough offerings to enjoy a meal by itself – 2 soups are included on the salad bar along w/ dessert of a cinnamon roll.
Cheeseburger was quite large and scrumptious and an excellent price.

Small family business with huge selection on menu. The windy whopper was awesome ( handmade burger, not a frozen patty) The steak sandwich I think was probably the best one I’ve eaten ( thick and tender). Worth the drive.. oh and the prices were just as good as the food

I went there with my ex-wife back when we were still together. I had the catfish. It was very very good and she had the chicken. She was very happy with her meal, which I have to admit. It was nice to see her. Happy once in a while. The french fries regarding the Sotos cold. The atmosphere is cool and the staff is very nice.

I call this a hidden gem. A restaurant you absolutely must visit! Never have a had a bad meal here. A wide selection. All of the food is very good! I love the salad bar. Not overly priced. Locally family owned. Going back several generations. Service as good as it gets! Kept clean. Try to come here a few times a year. Including my birthday. Checks all of the boxes. Giving this restaurant five stars was a no brainer.

Ordered take out Christmas meal for 12. Delicious food! Comes very nicely packaged in warmer totes and easy to transport. Price was very reasonable, and we will certainly do this again! Had beef and fried chicken, mashed potatoes, green beans, salad, rolls and butter.

Had my son’s second birthday party in the banquet room. Jimmy was very helpful and accommodating and it was very easy to childproof so parents could sit and chat while the kids played! Jimmy was very helpful in putting tables up to block off areas and arranging things the way we wanted. Great prices, great food, everyone was so nice and helpful. Would definitely have more parties there and recommend to all my friends and family. Definitely worth the drive!

Had dinner here tonight (9/17/22). We were celebrating my son and my nieces birthdays. The food was great and our waitress was amazing. Kalmes is one of my favorite restaurants, and we live about an hour away. We’ll worth the hour drive. Prime rib was excellent tonight. Great salad bar. Really nice, simple atmosphere. We have had good food and good service every time we stop in. I believe our waitresses name was maybe Laura? I believe she was one of the owners? Sorry if I got that wrong.. Anyway she was awesome and made the night very enjoyable for us all. Thank you.
