Welcome to Kalei’s LunchBox!
My friends don’t eat meat, so we went for a rack of their grilled Ono sandwiches and two orders of Hurricane deep friend Brussel sprouts without meat, and everything was delicious.
They have a super Loco Moco with 3 patties on it that I definitely want to come back for. One of the neighboring tables ordered one of the breaded teriyaki pork plates which looked beautifully dusted with a light crispy breading and a teriyaki sauce drizzle on the already teriyaki marinated meat. I was very interested in trying that too (which they offer with lightly breaded, crispy beef or crispy pork), but we had more than enough food to satisfy the craving.
Service was quick and friendly. There were two registers and helpers doing a great job of handling orders in person and taking orders and payment over the phone.
This place must be great as we saw loads of people ordering over the phone and coming in to pick up orders, not to mention the loads of local customers eating inside.
We ran into some friends who were here for a big to go order to take home to their family and they said they love Kalei’s.
We had a lovely experience and are definitely looking forward to our next visit.
If you happen to be up country or interested in making a detour from the beach. I highly recommend a stop into Kalei’s Lunchbox for a delicious spread of Hawaiian treats, meat, seafood, etc.
Thank you for taking the time to read my review and hope you have an amazing meal!
Mahalo and Happy Island Travels!
It took us about 25 minutes to get our food. The kitchen appeared a bit disorganized.
Everything we ordered (except the salad) was much too salty. Even the kids complained about the salt level. We couldn’t finish anything except the salad.
The Loco Moco was overcooked and dry. The beef patties were much too salty. They were skimpy on the gravy. When we asked for more gravy, they tried to charge us extra, until we explained the loco moco was far too dry and inedible.
The Mahi Ala Kalei was also too salty. The fish was overcooked. Did not taste as good as it sounded.
The saimin was also too salty. The noodles weren’t as chewy as the Maui Lani location. This location gave one large fatty piece pork in the saimin. The Maui Lani location gave well-seasoned char siu (Chinese BBQ pork) pieces already cut up.
The mac salad had much too much mayo.
The shrimp salad was the best thing we ordered. Fresh ingredients, good dressing. But who goes to a plate lunch place for a salad?
