I was visiting Carlsbad and had lunch there. The place was super cute and bright. Very friendly staff with an amazing playlist (yes, every song was good ) . And the sushi… was divine! We loved our Philadelphia rolls. The tuna special was great and the sashimi combo too! A good tip is their Bento lunch box! A very good portion and delicious!

Horrible experience on Valentine’s Day. Chaotic service. Overpriced Makase and overpromised and under delivered quality and quantity of food. Nothing was tasty. Pulled a long strain of hair from my mouth after eating salad. Disgusting. Nothing was offered as compensation. I had to ask. Bill was dropped off at our table by another server before all our meal was served. Our server wasn’t sure she left and came back and said she got 2 different answers from 2 chefs.

Kai Ola was good but not as good as I had hoped. The sushi was fresh but I think the composition was just OK. We had the Moonlight roll, Sunset roll, Crispy rice, cucumber salad, yellowtail and albacore nigiri as well as an order of uni nigiri. Everything was fresh and presented as described in the menu. Somehow the flavors just felt flat to me, a bit boring. Service was prompt and friendly. Don’t really understand the 3% “service fee” in addition to 20% tip. But no complaints about the service.

Kai-Ola was excellent. We reserved the 5 person table up front for dinner on New Years Eve at 5:30 p.m. and got some great sushi and great service. The theme at this restaurant is a relaxing surfer feel and very chill. Will be back again.

awful experience!!! visited today hoping for a great roll and ordered the ponto roll, saw the picture of the katsu chicken and ordered that as well. the roll tatsed like it couldve come from a grocery story for $5 and the chicken was NOT katsu chicken. was plain and had an awful sauce. the only thing that was edible on this plate was the rice. do not spend your money here!!!

Originally i gave 5 stars but after eating here and ordering to go numerous times (10+) I am changing it (sadly).
Do not order to go/pickup/uber eats from here. I ordered pickup and was told 40 minutes and waited an hour and a half almost (this was several months ago). Tonight, I ordered Uber Eats at 640 and it said 740 delivery…. It didnt get delivered until 840 my poor Uber Eats driver waited an hour. I called and she basically said they had a ton of uber orders and couldnt get around to any of them. This business has no business accepting uber eats orders when they are already struggling to get food to the tables eating there but they still do it and its mind boggling to me. I was in the restaurant business for years and trust me I hate writing this but it pains me to experience what I have with them. Also one of the sushi rolls was warm tonight and it reminded me that it was the same way last time. Just not good and unfortunately it overshadows the good experiences in person.
Im also gluten free and asked if they could put a little gluten free tamari on the side and they didnt – they did add a ton of packs of soy sauce though which made me wonder if they made the rolls gluten free at all.
