A delicious dinner! They had a cheese-in-hamburg steak that our server Andy recommended and it was delicious! All of our choices were good. I love the fried oysters. Grear size, huge and delicious and not overdone. My fillet was tender and both were fried perfectly. Friend enjoyed the katsudon and we all enjoyed the fried mackerel and shishito peppers. Definitely planning on going back soon. For those of you waiting for the hype and lines to die down, it has! Andy says no more waits. Actually kinda slow. So swing by and show some love and leave with a happy belly.

This was my second visit to Kagura in Monterey Park, and I’m glad I gave it another shot because this time it didn’t disappoint.

My friend and I came for lunch, and it was pretty busy. I ordered the premium pork loin katsu, which was the right call. On my first visit, I tried the premium pork filet and found it a bit dry, but the loin was a big improvement. It was fried perfectly and stayed juicy inside. The mustard that came with the katsu was a nice touch, and the katsu sauce on the table was spot on. Not too salty and not too sweet.

Service was just okay. They refilled my water once, and overall interaction was minimal. Nothing bad, just very straightforward.

The ambiance was quiet enough for a normal conversation, which I appreciated. Parking can be challenging on weekends since the area is packed with restaurants and businesses, so plan a little extra time.

Overall, I would still come back when I’m craving a good katsu.

I came to Kagura in Monterey Park for lunch on a Friday after a friend recommended it. I brought two friends and we started with the wasabi raw octopus appetizer. For our mains we ordered the premium pork loin katsu with curry, the millefeuille katsu without cheese, and the chicken katsu with cheese.

The meats were tender but lacked flavor. Without the curry or dipping sauce, the katsu tasted pretty plain. The curry sauce was the only thing that really stood out.

Service was attentive and the staff were friendly. The ambiance was nice and comfortable, making it easy to have a conversation. Parking was simple with a lot available in the front and back.

Overall, it was an okay experience. Nothing bad, but not memorable enough to make me want to rush back.

Ever since Katsuhana (the tonkatsu restaurant inside Torrance Mitsuwa) closed, we’ve been missing a place for good-quality katsu. When Kagura first opened in Torrance/Gardena, we tried it out but felt the katsu wasn’t freshly fried and the flavors were a bit bland.
Later, they opened a small takeout stand inside the Gardena Marukai food court, and to our surprise, the quality there was actually better than their main restaurant. I usually go for the Tsukedare Katsudon set, while my husband alternates between the Menchikatsu set and the Filet Katsu set.
After the pandemic, we were excited to hear that Kagura was opening a restaurant in Monterey Park—much closer for us. We decided to wait a bit after their grand opening to avoid the crowds and visited on a quiet Sunday afternoon. At first it looked closed, but luckily they were open, and we might have even been their first customers of the day. The staff greeted us warmly and let us choose any seat, which made for a relaxed experience.
The menu here offered more variety than the other locations and even had curry, which was a big plus. My husband ordered the Menchikatsu with curry, and I tried the Chicken Nanban. Presentation was excellent, and the katsu was freshly fried, juicy, and tender. Everything tasted great.
The only minor drawback was that my husband wished the rice portion was a bit larger to go with the curry, though we didn’t check if rice refills were available.
Overall, we had a great meal and would definitely recommend this Kagura location to family and friends.

This new Katsu spot in Monterey Park has been quite busy. There is always a wait for some light and delicious katsu. As a result, the service is polite and prompt, your order is taken quickly, and the food also comes out in a timely manner. The staff is efficient in the most polite way. They definitely have this recipe down for a batter that is light and airy – crispy on the outside, yet moist on the inside. It will also fill your crunch ASMR recording needs should you choose to do so.
A clean, nice restaurant to come and get your Japanese katsu fix. You will not be disappointed. It came highly recommended and I will pass it along to everyone else. Try it, it’s good!

The tonkatsu was delicious but it’s not necessary to wait more then 20 minutes – like I’m fine with any Hawaiian or Japanese mom and pop store that offers this on their menu. The katsu is tender and delicious on the inside with a nice thin flaky coat. The ginger pork was slightly sweet and it’s the only item not deep fried. Also their curry was just the smooth silky type without veggies or pieces of meat. No bonus.

After my last visit, I couldn’t stop thinking about this place so I came back again after work on a Friday. The hype is real. This time the wait was about an hour, but to be fair, the restaurant is small and they turn tables pretty quickly.

I went with the Millefeuille Katsu, which is made with thin layers of pork stacked together and fried katsu-style. It was amazing super tender, moist, and still perfectly crispy. Both katsu dishes I’ve tried here have been excellent, and honestly, it’s something I crave often.

Can’t wait to come back again… just wish the line wasn’t so long!

I came for lunch on a Wednesday and the seats were filled pretty much immediately. The store only has 8 tables/booths, so expect waiting times during the busier hours and weekends.

I ordered their main premium tontaksu dish and it was really delicious! You can hear them pounding the pork to tenderize it in the kitchen, so it does come out very soft to bite. The panko crust is nice and crunchy, so everything comes together well. There are some tiny side dishes it comes with and I liked the sweet pumpkin looking dish. Overall, I enjoyed this place and want to come back and try some of the curry dishes.
