I’m moving reviews over from Yelp and didn’t want to miss this one since I enjoyed the place so much. Not sure why they were marked as temporarily closed. This was originally published 7/22/17:

This place qualifies as both a hole-in-the-wall and a hidden gem. If you blink you’ll miss it when driving there. Approach from the wrong direction and you’ll need to turn around to find it.

I was in for a late lunch and it was a one-man operation. The guy who took my order, cooked it and served me was exceptionally friendly and open about their food. When it comes to this stuff, I always want to hear more about it. Where do they get their ingredients, what gets made in-house, whose stuff do they prefer and why? The gentleman talked me through everything and I decided to get a gyros sandwich. The lamb shank sounded amazing but I did have some obligations in the afternoon and a large, heavy meal would not have made much sense.

Some notes on the food:

First up was a small plate of hummus for me to try – delicious. I liked the balance of flavors he created and everything (the garlic, tahini, chick peas and olive oil) was discernable in the few bites he presented me just so I could try it. I also really enjoyed the fact that the pita was soft and pillowy with a slight char from the grill.

I also asked him to sell me a piece of falafel to try. I don’t think these are made in-house and it was not a high point of my lunch. Glad I tried it…won’t order it in the future.

Next up was my gyros. They are using Olympia. As the gentleman explained (I concur) it costs a bit more than other options you can get from DevonCo but it’s worth it! I didn’t realize they offered a pre-sliced variety but it tasted the same and they crisped it up a little on the flattop so it was exactly the right combination of flavor and texture I hoped to receive. Their tzatziki sauce was made in-house and chock full of bits of cucumber. Loved it!

There were dessert options that I left alone because I did have a lot I needed to accomplish after lunch but maybe next time…

Note: I believe there were two couches, exactly 5 seats at a total of 2 tables. This is not a place to take a group. Hopefully they will find much success and consider moving to a larger space.

We were in town for an appointment and decided to stop by. The menu has all the usual favorites like rice with kabobs, gyros, and more. The food was amazing – it tasted just like homemade! Even my 6-year-old, who’s a picky eater, tried different dishes without any complaints. The owner was super friendly and welcoming. We’ll definitely be back whenever we’re in town!

The flavor was fantastic. It was perfectly seasoned. We got the mixed meat over rice, the Butter chicken and cheese fries with seasoning on top. I almost didn’t try the fries because my husband gets them everywhere but I’m glad I did. Best cheese fries I’ve tried in St Louis . This was a great place for a taste of India. They even have Indian style music on the TV. Thank you ladies for the wonderful service and meal.

I stay right around the corner from this place and visited again yesterday to try their spicy gyro. 10/10 The atmosphere is very clean, aesthetic and beautiful. The owner was very polite and nice, took my order, cooked my food and brought it out to me (true hustler). I’ve been here before for the chicken and beef tikka masalas as well as the veggie sombosas which are also a 10/10 with the pita/nan bread. This is a hidden gem here in St. Louis Highly recommend and I’ll be back You can check out my TikTok of this restaurant @ lalitaeats

Ordered to go. Service was good I didn’t find the food to be good. The pita was actually Nan bread and kind of stale. The hummus was a very small quantity for the price and not fresh tasting. Falafel sandwich, I would give 3 stars to. Not returning here

I apologize for three things. One my mango lassi did not make it home to be in the photo it was just too good. Two I didn’t care to take good photos I was too excited to eat. Three that I didn’t try this place sooner. When I walked in the man who greeted me was incredibly sweet. Had to leave to cook the food himself and even apologized for a wait that did not take long at all. The food is absolutely incredible. So fresh and flavorful. I will be back a million times and I will be bringing new friends every time.

Today was my lucky day! I came on a day that the owner made the most delicious beef dumplings served with an amazing red sauce and drizzled with tzatzki. The dumpling dough was rolled perfectly thin and was so very tender. Unfortunately it was so delicious that I dug right in without taking a picture.

Be sure to try their very delicious cookie and a cup of chai. I’m not sure of all the ingredients, but I do recall the owner telling me it has saffron and rose water. It’s a shortbread style cookie that is not overly sweet and goes well with the delicious chai.

It’s probably good for my budget and waistline that I live 50 minutes away, but I will be back.

A friend and I ate here for the first time. We ordered the appetizer plate, tzatziki fries, lamb gyro, beef gyro salad, and chicken tikka masala. Everything was made fresh to order, tasted absolutely fantastic, and the service was spectacular! Definitely 5 out of 5!

If you are wanting something different,  yet extraordinary I strongly recommend you give Kabul Express STL a try.  Kauash the owner is AMAZING and makes his entrées with his own twist.

Appetizers Eggplant with Pita is one of my absolute favorites and what always brings me back for more.  The falafel with tzatziki and hummus with garlic pita is also superb.
Entrées, Butter Chicken,  Beef Kabob over rice with jalapeños chutney are mouth watering.

You won’t be disappointed with the great customer service,  the new location is beautiful, spacious and has enough room to hold family gatherings or parties. Kauash will cater your event with the most amazing,  mouth watering,  delicious food and desserts.
Please take the time to visit Kauash at Kabul Express for so great food.
