This place qualifies as both a hole-in-the-wall and a hidden gem. If you blink you’ll miss it when driving there. Approach from the wrong direction and you’ll need to turn around to find it.
I was in for a late lunch and it was a one-man operation. The guy who took my order, cooked it and served me was exceptionally friendly and open about their food. When it comes to this stuff, I always want to hear more about it. Where do they get their ingredients, what gets made in-house, whose stuff do they prefer and why? The gentleman talked me through everything and I decided to get a gyros sandwich. The lamb shank sounded amazing but I did have some obligations in the afternoon and a large, heavy meal would not have made much sense.
Some notes on the food:
First up was a small plate of hummus for me to try – delicious. I liked the balance of flavors he created and everything (the garlic, tahini, chick peas and olive oil) was discernable in the few bites he presented me just so I could try it. I also really enjoyed the fact that the pita was soft and pillowy with a slight char from the grill.
I also asked him to sell me a piece of falafel to try. I don’t think these are made in-house and it was not a high point of my lunch. Glad I tried it…won’t order it in the future.
Next up was my gyros. They are using Olympia. As the gentleman explained (I concur) it costs a bit more than other options you can get from DevonCo but it’s worth it! I didn’t realize they offered a pre-sliced variety but it tasted the same and they crisped it up a little on the flattop so it was exactly the right combination of flavor and texture I hoped to receive. Their tzatziki sauce was made in-house and chock full of bits of cucumber. Loved it!
There were dessert options that I left alone because I did have a lot I needed to accomplish after lunch but maybe next time…
Note: I believe there were two couches, exactly 5 seats at a total of 2 tables. This is not a place to take a group. Hopefully they will find much success and consider moving to a larger space.
Be sure to try their very delicious cookie and a cup of chai. I’m not sure of all the ingredients, but I do recall the owner telling me it has saffron and rose water. It’s a shortbread style cookie that is not overly sweet and goes well with the delicious chai.
It’s probably good for my budget and waistline that I live 50 minutes away, but I will be back.
Appetizers Eggplant with Pita is one of my absolute favorites and what always brings me back for more. The falafel with tzatziki and hummus with garlic pita is also superb.
Entrées, Butter Chicken, Beef Kabob over rice with jalapeños chutney are mouth watering.
