We thought we’d stay local and try out Jukai. Looks like an actual restaurant, right? So it’s Saturday evening and they’re doing a roaring take out business. The staff didn’t seem to know what to do with dine in customers. We eventually made it to the cash and were handed a paper menu. The Bento box looked like a good combination so we ordered one beef teriyaki bento, one chicken Katsu bento, and a couple of bowls of miso. Only a cooler full of drinks so we ordered a couple of ciders. Never been to a Japanese place that doesn’t offer tea.
A full thirty minutes later with no interaction whatsoever (full counter service I guess, so no water brought to us, cleared the table ourselves), our little buzzer went off and we collected two trays.
The spring rolls were the only part of the meal that was close to hot. The most disappointing was the tempura. One shrimp and two pieces of sweet potato each. Pasty and flabby, cold, not at all crisp, and the veggies were not fully cooked.
My husband’s beef teriyaki was less beef than the sandwich in one of those triangle boxes at Sobeys. It had some sauce, but no vegetables at all, not even onion. See pic…and note how small it looks next to the perfectly normal sized sushi.
At least they pretended to sauce it though. The only other sauce was a container of soy sauce, with wasabi for the sushi. Note that means there was zero sauce of any kind for the spring rolls, the tempura, or my chicken Katsu.
I guess the takeout business was mostly sushi? Our cal rolls were ok, nothing special, but probably the best of what we got.
When I think of the lovely Bento boxes I’ve had recently at Sushi Nami and Let’s Ko, I’m really sorry we wasted our money and our time at this place. What a waste of a date night.
First, the sushi were not well rolled and fell apart easily. Second, I couldn’t really recognize the sushi from my order because they looked from the picture. For instance, Sunset Roll had an unusual shape in the photo and was fully wrapped in salmon, whereas in reality this wasn’t the case at all. Also, I felt like the rolls were quite small. Especially the spider roll, which in the picture gives an impression of a much bigger roll (and also costs more)
Overall, the sushi tasted decent, but I wish JUKAI put more effort into presentation – like rolling the sushi properly, and making sure they look more like in the pictures
The delivery took over two hours, which I understand may partly be an issue with Uber Eats. However, even setting that aside, the food quality itself was underwhelming and didn’t meet expectations.
Like other reviewers, I agree that their model seems to be based around a takeout system. There’s still plenty of space to eat inside of the restaurant though.
Only docking a star because my fish was a little tough, the rest was enjoyable though, especially with the price point.
Wide variety of sushi rolls in salmon, tuna, shrimp, crab, or with veggies. Kids really love the sweet potato avocado roll here. Different types of poke bowls too.
Friendly staff. Enough parking spots available.
