Iconic restaurant in San Antonio. This was our first time eating here. Ribeye steak was tender and delicious but they are thin cut steaks. Same with the porkchops. Good flavor and tender but the thin cut you get at HEB. Definitely not the thick cut meats one would get at a higher end steak house. The sides were delicious. We loved the sliced fried potatoes that came with the chicken tenders. The Broccoli, corn, mashed potatoes and onion rings were tasty. Friendly and professional wait staff. Attentive and made us feel welcome. The tree inside the restaurant was a unique touch. Overall we enjoyed the atmosphere and the food but we were just a little disappointed the meats were the very thin cut.

I looked up this place and it looked very good! Had high hopes for the food it looked delicious online. But when I ordered to go my chicken was pink I’m glad I noticed before I ate too much!

Still a classic. Parking was a little convoluted. You have to register your car through an app and then when you go inside your server has to verify through a scan allowing you two hours of free parking. Don’t be in a hurry, you’ll need to work that into your lunch time. You do have to include a credit card so be ready for that. The good news is once you’ve registered you don’t have to register again, your server will show you how to scan in to start the clock for your 2 hours. Our server, I think her name was Maria, was excellent. We never went without she was very good about keeping her eye on everything including the refills. My friend had the chicken Verde special and I had the pork chop special. My friend said their lunch was excellent. My pork chops, yes there’s two, on the thin side but were deliciously seasoned and perfectly cooked. Had a craving for corn on the cob as the side, actually reminded me of a corn that I tasted in LA. It’s like a fried corn on the cob with spices really delicious. Glad to satisfy that craving here. And then the green beans were really great with a lot of good little surprises LOL, see a picture. Overall a great lunch. Aside from the few minutes we had to designate signing up the car. It was my friend that signed their car up, so next time I go I’m going to have to go through the same workflow. The thing is I will dedicate that time as long as the reward is an excellent lunch with excellent service. I’m telling you it’s a classic.

This is a nice little American style restaurant. The staff are nice but do hover a bit. Our waiter watched us eat for several minutes. Other than that, it was a nice experience.

I LOVE this restaurant! The queso with crispy sausage and grilled onions was worth the calories. The steak with shrimp was everything I hoped it would be. Tender. Mouth-watering. Crispy. This restaurant is a MUST!

We celebrated my mother’s 87th birthday here for lunch. There were six of us and we loved the food and service. We had artichoke dip to start, and our entrees were steaks, shrimp, burgers, and kebabs. Highly recommend this San Antonio institution!

How the El Rey burger has not hit the radar, is amazing. Stopped in after a long event and had some darn good drinks and one heck of a burger with excellent onion rings to accompany. Grilled bun, juicy patty and all the right fixings… One of the best burgers I’ve ever had, no doubt. This place will be a regular for us whenever we come through town.

Spinach Artichoke Dip was incredible! Ribeye was ok, more of an “American diner” cut than a thick ribeye. Moscato was fantastic and from a local Texas winery! The chicken is highly recommended.

The food was good with a fun atmosphere. As stated by other people, the onion rings were on point. My wife’s sirloin was cooked perfectly, however my T-bone was overcooked. The queso was not quite hot enough, however I did not send it back due to hunger. The peach cobbler wasn’t quite cooked fully and wasn’t served warm. I asked the server if it was served hot before I added ice cream on top and she confirmed that it would be, so that’s why I mention it. With the price of the food I would expect the food to be a bit better when it comes to temp. My son’s grilled cheese was very dark and the cheese itself was not fully cooked. Meaning they cooked it on a flat top or a pan that was too hot, personally, I would’ve thrown it away, and re-cooked it before I ever sent that out. I’d probably go 3 1/2 stars if that was an option I really wanted to like this place due to all the wonderful reviews, maybe my food was just the exception.
