John’s Place: A Place for Everyone In the 1960s and 1970s, Cookeville, Tennessee was a segregated town. There were only three places where people of all races could go to have a beer: John’s Place, a restaurant and bar owned by John McClellan. John’s Place was a popular hangout for Cookeville residents, including Tennessee Technological University students and alumni. The restaurant was known for its delicious food, friendly atmosphere, and welcoming staff. In 2011, John’s Place was listed on the National Register of Historic Places for its role in the civil rights movement. The restaurant is a reminder of a time when Cookeville was a more inclusive community. Everybody’s Welcome at John’s Place!

This place has so much great history and the owners are amazing. They really love to share the history of the place.

We love to try the food that is recommended by the staff. Julie suggested the catfish – I normally do not like catfish – but they made it sound wonderful so we tried it. The fish was so good. Perfect batter. My husband loves catfish and feels this was the best he ever had. The food here is not your normal bar fare. Tasted fresh and very flavorful. Julie was very friendly and chatty. Troy (owner) was very personable and he seems to love what he does. Friendly local crowd

Stop in and try the full bar and kitchen. I hope you enjoy it as much as we did.

Cool place!!!! Staying at KOA/Fort Mill….headed back home to Myrtle Beach after a week in Gatlinburg TN. Happy to know this is right next door to campground. Bar, pool tables, darts, jukebox, outside eating under shaded area, food truck AND gas station, convenience AND liquor store…..all in one spot. ♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️

They close at 5, ya’ll. The food is delicious and there’s a beer to wet your whistle. Definitely a great stop.

No handicap accessible restrooms.
Tall steps & no handrail to door. I really think this is in violation of ADA requirements.

New owners are selling domestic beer for a whopping $4 per-bottle. That is not even realistic. Bar is almost always empty of customers. Food went downhill. Do not see how they plan to stay in business. No music unless you pay for the jukebox, either. No happy hour. No liquor.

The food is mediocre now. It used to be so good before they switched management. There were no alcoholic beverages available just beer. I got a bottle of water. The fish basket is what I always get and the only thing that was sorta tasty was the French fries.

Found this little place on our way to Florida. Very friendly man who owns the place also does all the cooking. His daughter, Doodle, served us and was super friendly. The pulled pork sandwich was excellent and the cole slaw was homemade and beyond any we’ve ever had. There is a pool table and jukebox. Our 8 yr old said he wanted to come back and eat on our way back home. Thanks for the great food!

We have been meaning to stop by here for a while. Stopped in today. Sooo good. The burger and onion rings were fabulous. The grilled catfish basket was over the top. The server was awesome. I am impressed with this establishment. From the history to the menu, it was a great restaurant.
