The menu was a bit limited (sadly, no crab cakes. Made in house and chef didn’t have time to prep them in the morning), but we made it work and everyone ended up happy with their meals. The food came out hot and flavorful; the fish was perfectly cooked, the steak was juicy, and the sides were solid comfort bites.
Now, about my tequila sour… let’s just say it didn’t quite look (or taste) like one. On a previous visit, it was on point, so I’m guessing Drake, one of the bartenders who really knows his craft, wasn’t in that day.
The only area that could use some love is the restroom. One stall had no toilet paper and there was no soap, which might just be part of the short staffing struggle, so I’m giving them a pass this round.
All in all, Johnny’s Dock has a lot of potential. Between the waterfront views, good food, and a staff doing their best under pressure, it’s still a solid pick for a casual lunch or special occasion. Will definitely be back to try more of their Indian cuisine menu. Supposedly the shrimp peri peri is really good!!
We waited about 20 minutes to be seated while no one else appeared to be waiting. A staff member—possibly a host or waitress—briefly came up, asked how many were in our party (3), and then left the front area without explaining the wait.
Shortly after, another couple came in and was seated almost immediately. The couple even mentioned that we had been there first, yet they were still seated before us. If there was a reason they were seated ahead of us, a quick explanation would have been appreciated. Basic communication and courtesy go a long way when guests are waiting.
After waiting a while longer without any update, we decided to leave. Unfortunately we can’t comment on the food since we were never seated, but the front-of-house service left a disappointing first impression.
I’m not usually one to leave a negative review, but the experience made my family feel invisible. I hope this feedback encourages better communication with guests in the future. Maybe one day I’ll get the chance to try the food and update this review.
We looked at the menu and decided it wasn’t so bad. Till we sat down and realized we had to order the same thing. We don’t really like the same food. So this was a major disappointment to us. We were then filled in that it would be a 25-35 minute wait to get food after we ordered. We had extra time allocated so this wasn’t a big deal.
We were given water right away. But as time went by begin to realize nobody was eating and everyone only had water. We begin noticing only 5 tables around us were eating. 11 had only water. As another 30 minutes went by we still had not even ordered drinks. But we noticed the sole waitress had served others including given them meals. This was now 45 minutes in. Now we did try to talk to 3-4 different people but they all seemed completely zoned out and distraught. We even tried going to the hostess and she was no where to be found as people were lined up at the front.
This is the point where we opted being very vocal about the staff ignoring us. The table next to us was being helped and she told the waitress why are you ignoring them we have our food and you haven’t even helped them. She quickly turned to us. At which point we advised her we were leaving and a bit of back story regarding how long we been waiting on our failed attempts to get staff to serve us.
We knew it was not her fault. She was massively overworked. But she continued to panic and run off quickly after we left our table.
We are willing to give it another shot. Clearly they were short staffed, and the employees including the owner was distraught.
I would like to also ads that the restaurant seemed out dated, kinda had that feel you just moved in and haven’t made the place yours yet. The mens bathroom stunk so bad of urine you could smell it in the hall. Using the bathroom I found no soap or paper towels in the bathroom. Imagine this is the same bathroom staff would also use. Just cause you can’t see the germs does not mean they do not exist. Clean you damn your damn bathrooms.
As for my date, she demanded to be taken home after we left. What a night. I am just glad I told multiple incoming customers of their lack of service tonight. Not one of them entered they all turned around and got in their cars. Made my night just a little better after this massive block.
A side note after dropping my date off I went to a different restaurant and had great service, amazing food and their bathroom didn’t smell like piss.
James the waiter was amazing.
The table top magician was extra points. Really friendly, funny, and entertaining.
Deck with live music was the icing on the cake.
We can’t wait to go again…
Don’t recommend ordering from uber eats. I’m not a picky eater but I understand why they had a buy one get one free deal on items now. I did end up tossing the naan, usually that’s the best part and so delicious from other restaurants and this was not it and very soggy/floppy and BURNT (pic included).. the flavor was not good 🙁 I picked mild spice because it was the lowest option and it was very spicy. It’s ok I won’t be ordering again or going in person. If you are a newer restaurant on the water why are you serving food like this? Give this space to a restaurant owner with quality food, the Tacoma water front deserves nice restaurants on the water this was disgusting.
ORDERED SHRIMP LOUIE FOR $28 & LAMB SHISH KABOB FOR $29, NOT GOOD, WILL NEVER GO BACK EVER.
