Heard great things about Johnny Reb’s, so I decided to try it.
We sat down around 6:15 enjoyed the cornbread and rolls while deciding what to order. I got a simple hamburger (add mayo and mustard) with fries; my brother ordered the large chicken fried steak—which turned out to be just two smaller steaks covered in gravy. The food came out in decent time, but my burger was missing condiments. The waitress brought them when I asked, but after that there was no follow-up for OVER 30 minutes. Table was never cleared.
We paid the check ($32.06) around 7:15.

The burger was good, the fries were cold and soggy, and the service was terrible. The waitress even gave a slick look when she saw the tip—which honestly matched the service we received. As a small, local business, that’s really discouraging because I’ve been to other small spots that left a much better impression.

First of all, we sat at the table for about 15 minutes before anyone even came to check on us. Once the food came, the chicken fried chicken was hard and crispy. The manager came and said that she was replacing the order (and didn’t) we sent the food back and were still charged for it which was insane. The food was absolutely cold to where the butter didn’t even melt on the potato. This was the most horrible experience I’ve had at a restaurant and the fact that we drove from Waco to eat is even more crazy. The manager also stated that there was no one else to speak to on any day about our experience. I will NEVER come back and would definitely not recommend to a soul

Wonderful food and service! If you’re looking for good food with attentive service, this is the place for you. We had the combo appetizer with fried mushrooms, fried pickles and onion rings. They were devious! The mushrooms are some of the best we’ve ever eaten. We also had the chicken fried steak. The portion was huge! We split the large plate (which comes with 2 steaks), and we could, and should have, split the small because they were so big. Will definitely stop by again, if in the area.

An all American menu, that is presented by a wonderfully positive and cheery waitstaff. I was pleasant surprised that there was no separation from the batter from chicken fried steak. The banana pudding wasn’t overly sweet and had a great balance. The overall cafe was quite clean and charming. Jakourtny is an outstanding waitress. I look forward to coming by and trying some of their other items

While traveling we stopped and had lunch at this restaurant. It is a blast from the past, super retro feel with very solid food. The chicken fried steak was tasty with outstanding crust and gravy. It has something for everyone on the menu.

We were staying at the Loves RV area for the night. Decided to give Johnny Rebs a try. We were greeted as soon as we entered. It has a nice and clean atmosphere. Ice water for me and iced tea for my husband were brought right out, as well as a warm bread basket with yummy cornbread muffins and yeast rolls. I had the the small chicken fried steak dinner which was anything but small! Mashed potatoes were real and creamy with a good cream gravy. The steamed broccoli was nice and tender, not hard. My husband got a mushroom chicken sandwich and fries and really liked it. All for under $20.00 !!! I highly recommend this restaurant

This is a cute little find for those of us from out of town. I must admit that I chose it based on the word Cafe, but the food was a step above what I would normally consider from a typical cafe – with dishes like Beef Tips and Rice, Chicken Parmesan, etc. They have daily specials as well as lunch specials, burgers, sandwiches, and a great selection of dinner items. The food was a tiny bit on the bland side, but if you are coming to a cafe you probably arent expecting a ton of spice. It was great home cooking at fairly reasonable prices. Excellent service with a smile, our server anticipated our needs and never left us wanting. Oh, and it was pretty quick getting our food, that was another plus. Would definitely eat here again for some great comfort food!

Dixie Cafe is located in Hearne, TX. About half way between DFW and Houston. We were looking for a local diner on the way home, and we chose here because it had the highest rating. Location is convenient, right off the main road. Plenty of parking. We were greeted as soon as we walked in. You can tell it kind of an older restaurant, but that’s kind of what makes Diners special. The fried mushrooms were very good and very hot. We both ordered chicken fried chicken. One piece is a small plate, and 2 pieces are large plates, both as seen in photos. The chicken was cooked perfectly, and the light breading and gravy were good. The beans and rice were good. The mashed potatoes were also good. Do not get the green beans. They are so bland, no seasoning, tastes like you open a can and pour them in a cup, and heat them up. The decor is minimalistic and nothing special, actually not really any decor at all. The only other issue is the benches. Hard wood, very uncomfortable after sitting for a while. The service was great. Bottom line, food is good enough to stop by to grab something to eat if passing through, but not that wow, I need to go back vibe.

We stopped by for dinner. There was no wait. The staff seated us and was very friendly. The chicken fried steak was very big and very good. The rolls and cornbread were so good that we had three baskets. The bill was very reasonable, and we had a very nice experience.
