I flew into St. Louis for business and, after checking into my hotel, decided to grab dinner. I specifically chose John D. McGurk’s because the website indicated the kitchen was open until 10:00 PM. I arrived at 9:08 PM—well within posted hours.
Upon arrival, the hostess was engaged in a conversation and only acknowledged me after a noticeable wait. I asked to sit at the bar, which she allowed, but the experience quickly deteriorated. While reviewing the dinner menu, I was told—rather sarcastically—“You know there’s the other side too,” which made it clear I was not welcome to order food at that time.
When I ordered the pork chop, the response included eye-rolling and an under-the-breath comment about how long it takes to cook, signaling clear frustration that I had ordered dinner during stated operating hours. That tone set expectations low—and unfortunately, the food confirmed it.
The pork chop arrived raw in the center and was inedible. The potato side appeared microwaved and rubbery. To his credit, the bartender was polite and candid, explaining that on slow nights they don’t actually follow the posted kitchen hours and may close early at their discretion.
That disconnect between advertised hours, staff attitude, and food quality is a serious operational miss—especially for travelers relying on accurate information after a long day. If the kitchen closes early, that needs to be clearly communicated. Guests should not be made to feel like an inconvenience for ordering food during published hours.
Disappointing experience overall and not one I would repeat on future business trips.

Visiting St. Louis for family event. Husband wanted to try an Irish Pub and this was near our hotel. Went in around 630 on a Friday night with no reservations- it was very busy but there was plenty of seating at the bar and was seated right away. Bartenders were all pleasant and responsive. I had the pork chop – best pork chop I’ve eaten in years (perfectly cooked and well seasoned, very generous portion for the price). Husband had fish and chips – which were very good. Atmosphere was fun and lively, locals struck up conversations, and there was a good live band that started after we finished eating. Outdoor bar areas are really cool too. Restrooms were clean. Parking is street parking- but there seemed to be plenty within a blocks walk. Would recommend and will go back when we are in town again.

John D. McGurk’s Irish Pub and Garden was a great time! The garden area has such a fun and laid-back vibe—perfect for enjoying a few cold beers. We had some appetizers and a burger, and everything hit the spot. Great atmosphere, friendly service, and a solid place to hang out and unwind. Definitely worth a visit if you’re in the area!

A little expensive but well worth it. Live Irish music almost every night. The staff is excellent and the Pub atmosphere is probably the best in St. Louis.

I went on Saint Patrick’s and I was really impressed how efficient and clean the place was. I was expecting St. PADDY’S chaos, AND IT WAS DELIGHTFUL.
Everything was clean, and the food kept coming fast and delicious. Our server Kelsea was awesome. Everything is perfect.

I had a cup of some of the best dang potato soup I have ever eaten accompanied with a child’s Chicken Strips. I opted for the steamed green beans that were seasoned perfectly and so tender, they melted in your mouth!! My husband ordered the Reuben Sandwich. Large portion piled high on a hoagie bun, topped with yummy kraut and gooey cheese! Homemade Irish Chips were served up piping hot and fresh. Never disappointed here!!

Great food and service in a beautiful garden.
The garden is a great spot for outdoor dining. Perhaps one of the best in St. Louis restaurant scene.
Menu offers enough choice for all without overdoing it. Potato soup remains delicious. Irish food items always tasty. Wings and burgers and chips and onion rings are reliably good. Grilled cheese a nice vegetarian option.
Service is attentive, friendly and efficient, and well staffed too.
Always a wide selection of beers to boot.
Definitely worth visiting for lunch or dinner. Can’t wait to return soon to try new items.
