We came and ordered two “meals” both ordered cornbread. About 10 minutes of waiting the guy comes out and says they only have 1 piece of cornbread left and they can swap one out for a different side. Very disappointing but I chose a different side. We get our food and about 10 minutes later they are bringing people out cornbread.
There was no do you want to wait for cornbread it was just we only have one piece left.
The food was delicious but after that I probably won’t come back.
The coleslaw has no flavor.

Staff is fun and attentive. Food was excellent. Half smoked chicken with double fries as my side, so I can enjoy the great sauces they offer. Mom got the five piece smoked wings with excellent cornbread and beans for her sides. Very delicious.

Superb quality restaurant food in a casual, welcoming setting, a vital element of the Iowa City area dining landscape. Can confirm the brisket, wings and burger are all in the top tier of Johnson County offerings. The rotating sauces and sandwiches keep it interesting (although being able to get the Apple BBQ sauce year round would be nice) and the staff is always nice when you walk in and step up to the counter. I’ve heard from lots of folks involved with Hawkeye athletics that Jimmy Jacks is the preferred favorite for catered meals for many of the teams and it makes sense- it’s tasty but it’s never too salty or over-seasoned, filling but doesn’t leave you sapped. Plus it’s local and the owners have done a lot for the community over the decades. Highly recommend!

Absolutely delicious ribs, which had a ton of fall-off-the-bone meat. My main complaint was that the meat was a bit dry, but their great house barbecue sauce was a great remedy. They also had a pickle bar.

This is counter service restaurant, which isn’t my favorite. But the food, half rib dinner was great. Also had baked beans, coleslaw both were really good and I would recommend all food I had. I felt the food was so good that the higher price is ok.

Always great! Absolutely love the smoked sausage sandwich. All the sides are solid but I really enjoy the fries, beans and cornbread! Cannot beat the BBQ mustard! No other place has one that beats it. Appreciate the condiment bar; always nice to grab pickles, onions, peppers and sauce to complete your plate!

JIMMY JACK’S IS GREAT! It was a last-minute decision for dinner. We were also the last customers for the night, and the staff still treated us awesomely. Everything we ordered was still available and amazing. I highly recommend the Original, Cowboy, Chicago and Carolina Vinegar for sauces. I added some of the Carolina to the coleslaw, and it was even better with some of the cornbread.
The brisket was great, and they offer skinny (lean) and fatty… (fatty) depending on your tastes. The yardbird (chicken) was sculant, smoky, and juicy. The ribs were finger pull apart, tinder and fall off the bone delicious. My son had the pulled pork sandwich. (And he’s kind of a picky eater. He devoured it.
All the sides we had were perfect. Plus, the fries my son had actually made it home with some of my 3 meat plate. Usually fries loose desirability once they go into the fridge. NOT THESE! I ate them while watching TV back at home.
I highly recommend it! We will be going back!

What happened here?!? Sad to say one of our seemingly regular trips to Jimmy Jacks has left us disappointed.
First the chicken sandwich was changed to a smoked chicken breast that apparently comes smothered in BBQ sauce and cheese (I have grown accustomed to saucing my own items at JJ so I opted to have the toppings on the side). What I was served was a very thin overcooked chicken breast that left much to be desired.
The brisket has been changed but staff assured us it was just being hand cut now (exactly how was it cut before- no one knows). My husband couldn’t pin point it but states it’s just not as good as it was.
When our food came was the time the staff decided to tell us the fries have been changed as well; SERIOUSLY?!? The fries too- this visit couldn’t get any more challenging could it? Well if you’ve brought a toddler it could- all 3 high chairs are broken in one capacity or another rendering them unsafe for use ♀️ ♀️ ♀️

Great food. Fast and friendly service. We first visited Jimmy Jack’s Rib Shack many years ago. The variety of delicious sauces is amazing. It’s actually worth a trip just to try the sauces because you can also buy nice bottles of your favorites. These are great to take home and also for giving as gifts. Many years ago we would drive across town to purchase the sauces in to-go containers. We were really pleased when they began bottling the sauces, and now they are available at Hy-Vee and other stores. We still stop in at Jimmy Jacks’s for food and to buy sauces there.
