Food was only lukewarm. Lobster was presented upside down. Scallops do not have a nice brown crust, suggesting that it was not cooked on a hot enough surface. . Restaurant initially smelled… overly fishy and took time to get used to. Service was not very well coordinated either — certain items were served too soon, while other items were served late. Only thing I enjoyed was the cocktail. Overall the place just gives off a vibe of trying to present itself a high end place, but so many details just felt very off.

Super busy Friday night got us some great food, all fresh, pre show downtown.
Raw oysters, scallops in mushroom cream sauce(great with warm bread to mop), lobster tail dinner and pepper crusted raw and seared tuna were all hits.
We definitely would go back when we’re in town!

It was my husband and I’s first time at Jay’s. We didn’t have reservations so we sat at the bar. We had the scallops and mussels for appetizers and they were delicious . For dinner I had the King Crab and my husband had the Fisherman’s Platter with swordfish. The entrees were perfect. The crab was melt in your mouth. The bartenders were great. Great service. 5 stars.

This was my 3rd and least favorite trip to Jay’s. We were a party of 8 on a packed Saturday. Everything took too long to get, from the drinks, to the apps and entrees. (The server wasn’t even aware we had a person that never received their food until we pointed it out.) Our server was okay but far from great. I ordered a bottle of wine for myself and said I’d have some here but take the rest. I ended up with my wine in a paper bag to go . He did open it after I explained i wanted some in the restaurant. I ordered mussels for the table. Some thought they were incredible, I thought they were okay flavor wise. My big complaint is they were SUPER gritty, like I was concerned I may have broken a tooth. I advised the server and he said there had been some complaints about that. He said sorry but we still paid for an item they knew was subpar. Our split checks were a mess. My check was shocking! I knew my entree would be expensive but when I saw $142 for my plate, I was shocked! I added king crab to my filet and cold potatoes. It was 100% my fault that I didn’t ask what the market price was. Totally on me. However, I do think servers should state (and most do) what the market price is when you place an order. I absolutely would have passed if I was told they were $95! Lesson learned. Honestly, I’d give the entire experience ⭐️⭐️⭐️ across the board. My previous experiences on slow nights were great which is why I rated ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.

Went to celebrate my husband’s retirement milestone. The dining area is beautiful, but you could barely hear the music, so the ambiance was mediocre. Just heard a man next to us talking about a show he was going to following dinner.

We orders appetizers to start the evening, crab cakes and scallops. The crab cake was fantastic, but the scallops were undercooked and bland.

Our main courses we experienced low quality shrimp and undercooked scallops? We didn’t complete our meals due to the undercooked fish.

We ordered a dessert trio, again it was just okay. Key lime pie was outstanding. We will not return due to the ambiance and undercooked fish. Disappointed with our experience.

Last night was my first and only time I have been to Jays. It’s been on my list for a long time. My problem is it was advertised as a 5 star experience, but I feel like I got 3 stars…

The good:

The cheese sticks. Some of the best I’ve ever had. They were like a fluffy and lightly breaded.

Wife had the king crab legs, they come cracked for you, and they were top quality! Huge amounts of meat, served with a butter tower.

Zucchini boat was served with my steak, it was loaded with a mushroom and cheese filling. It was really good.

I liked the house vinaigrette. It was like a lemon poppyseed thing. It was light and nice!

The bad/odd: When we first arrived the host was surprised we actually kept our reservation she felt it necessary to inform us of several no shows they had have.

Our server wasn’t great and she was odd. Started off by talking about her dog was her valentine. After brining us water she took awhile to take our order, informed us of the specials (2 diffrent fishes grouper and salmon) I tried to order the bone in steak (it was already sold out) which I thought was weird they opened at 4pm my reservation was at 6… so I got the filet instead.

Once our food came out we were enjoying our meal and the server was getting ready to serve the specials to another table and she brought it to show us. (I just thought it was really strange because we were already eating what we had ordered and then she’s showing us like what we could’ve had) it was just odd..

Steak was ok

We got chocolate cake at the end per our server’s recommendation, and it was one of the worst pieces of cake over ever had. I told the server that I didn’t care for it. She didn’t offer to take it away or get something else for us…

The salad is so basic, Just lettuce, carrots, and uncut tomatoes.. I’m surprised that I could get served a better salad at a chain restaurant like an Applebee’s or outback.

The bread had an odd taste to it. Almost like it was frozen and thawed out.

Also, I know it’s an older restaurant and the history is part of the charm, but just everything in there felt outdated and that it’s just running on old money and reputation. This is probably somewhere I won’t come back to just because of the overall experience from the service and the let down on some of the food items.

Like I said, it’s advertised as five stars and it feels more like three.

I would encourage to have a reservation. The place was packed on a Friday evening. The service was very good. The best scallops I had in Dayton. The shrimp was also very good, flavorful and soft. I got the gumbo (chefs special- not on the menu). It was good. The sausage had a unique flavor. Wife got the pasta which was decent as well. The place looks a little old. They validate the parking.

Historic charm with a dated dinner-house vibe. Had an old-building smell.

Friendly staff; they were very busy so it was pretty slow service to get our orders but server was gracious.
FOOD– soft bread w/ alot of salty topping, Bside salad with mixed greens and lots of tomatoes, good variety of house-made dressings;

I had the seared tuna, excellent. The portable a mushrooms were so good.
I did not expect the tuna to be on butter, which is unfortunate. I would not have chosen that.

The fisherman’s platter looked tasty.
Recommend ordering a specialty, not by meat/side.

The women’s bathroom reveals the dated building. Unlevel floor with narrow walls.
I can see how this restaurant was at its prime 20 years ago.

I have been here twice now, the first my fiancé’s birthday and the second for the birthday of my fiancé’s mother. Both times were lovely due to the excellent atmosphere, superb conduct of the staff, and of course the food. Would definitely recommend to anyone looking for a fancy place to dine!

People seem to love this place so I thought I would as there are not any phenomenal seafood places around. I didn’t love it, it wasn’t great. It was meh. I wouldn’t go back. The lobster tails were over cooked and tasted fishy. The scallops lacked flavor. I honestly don’t get the hype. The service was fine and the atmosphere seemed off somehow.
