I walked inside to find 4 kids literally playing baseball in the middle of the restaurant with the hoop hovering over where people order their food. The staff seemed to encourage play in exchange for free ice cream, which felt unsafe and off-putting for a dining experience. I ordered a 2-plate dinner (whiting, wings, plus two sides) and 2 whiting platters for my mom and daughter. The cashier was friendly, and the prices were decent, but a 15% tip option was added per order, even though it wasn’t a sit-down server setup, which I found annoying. (Tipping culture has gotten out of hand.) But I digress… I decided not to wait in the store for my food because I didn’t want to get hit on the head with the basketball, which, mind you, is SUPPLIED by the restaurant to encourage game play IN THE MIDDLE OF THE PLACE. It took about 15 minutes for my food to be ready, which I considered fast. I received my food and drove home. I got home, opened my food, only to see that they had forgotten the fried fish! Literally, there were 5 wings, some fries, and a space where the fish should have been. My mother offered me fish after deciding it wasn’t worth driving all the way back there for 2 pieces of fish, when they probably wouldn’t have acknowledged their mistake in the first place. This food… was bad… under-seasoned and over-fried. I quickly grew tired of chewing fried blandness with mac and cheese that was more deserving of the trash can. I won’t return unless under another assignment.
We ordered a dinner to share from the pick two menu and got two of their tea/fruit punch mixes. I got Trout and my Husband ordered Whiting. For a side, we upgraded to fried okra instead of fries. Everything came out hot and crispy!
The fish was flaky on the outside, white on the inside and had a clean taste (no frowsy fish taste here!) The fried okra was perfect, fried hard with the pop of soft okra seeds inside.
The in-house juice, however, (sigh) I really hate to say this but, it tasted like sugary fruit or tropical punch flavored kool-aid. I’m not a big fan of artificial flavorings so when they said it was made in-house (and you could tell from the packaging that this wasn’t a “branded” product) I thought it was made using fresh tea and real fruit. To their credit: they NEVER said that. I only assumed that. So I was a bit disappointed there, but ultimately the food was cooked so well and Ash’s excellent customer service far surpassed the kool aid tasting drink. I could always order a different drink or bring my own next time, but I’ll definitely be back for more fish and fried okra…also try other items on their menu.
We don’t have many options for good home cooked food on the southern MD side (Temple Hills, Clinton, Brandywine and Waldorf), especially good fried fish. So I’m happy to have them and support them. They’re just starting out but their fish is a lot better than some of the staple locations. I went to Horace & Dickies on Allentown Rd. the day before Mother’s Day and they had 1 person working. We waited almost an hour for nasty, soggy fish and tiny, overcooked shrimp.
When we want fried fish we’ll be making the drive here…for now at least. Check them out and let me know if you agree.
I’ve tried many fish and chicken places but this is a hidden gem.
Family and I went on a weekend and staff were quick and responsive. You can enjoy a classic arcade game while waiting for your fresh meal or shoot on their classic hoop.
Their homemade sauce is hands down best sauce I’ve had with chicken.
Can’t wait to go back!
There were so many options to choose from, and the prices were pretty reasonable depending on what you order. Everything was fresh and halal, and you can even ask to see the fish before they fry it. It’s not frozen, which is a big green flag. The place was super clean and everything looked fresh.
10/10 i’m coming back!!!!
One thing that really stood out was the little basketball hoop inside. My kids loved it and were so excited playing while we waited for our food. It was such a simple thing, but it made the visit way more enjoyable and felt really family-friendly.
The staff was warm, patient, and welcoming, and the place was clean. This is definitely one of those spots you’re happy to come back to. We’ll absolutely be returning and recommending it to others
