The lobster roll itself was good and we are glad we tried it given how iconic this location is. That said, the bread became a little soggy even though we ate it right away, and some pieces of the lobster tail were quite chewy.
At $35.99 per lobster roll with no sides or drinks included, it is on the pricier side. In our opinion, there are more flavourful spots out there with better bread. One example is Luke’s Lobster, even though it is a franchise.
Overall, we are glad we experienced such a well known Boston staple, but we will likely stick to other local spots when craving a lobster roll in the future.
The clam chowder was also super satisfying and is no slouch. Nice large clams and very tasty. All it needed was some pepper in my opinion but overall, 10/10 would recommend!!

Cute prop outside, next to the water. I think it’s a must try! There was no line, plenty of seating!
Maybe, we didn’t order it right, but it was just okay. We got the large lobster roll w/ mayo to share and some oysters cause my girlfriend is a huge oyster fan.
She said the oysters were great, super fresh — makes sense since its right next to the ocean.
The lobster roll, in my opinion, was just.. okay and it was disappointing cause it’s almost $35-40 for the roll. The amount of lobster justified the price, but it needed a little more love. It just seemed to quite literally be lobster tossed in some mayo and slapped on a cold roll. I feel like we could find something similar for a lot cheaper elsewhere.
I still think it’s worth a try being a Boston staple when visiting, but I’ll be looking to see if there’s something out there for a better price with a little more love, and a little more welcoming.
I ordered online for pickup to avoid the line, and left Lia tied out front for a brief moment while I went in to get my food.
I ordered the large lobster roll and small clam chowder. Chowder was good, lobster roll was stacked! Seriously, you need a fork to eat this roll. Honestly the only thing disappointing on this roll was the bread…slightly rubbery which made it difficult and messy to eat.
But yes, I definitely recommend…and with outdoor seating…five paws!
There’s no bar, just a cooler with sodas and water, but it somehow fits. The Seaport location is perfect for a stroll afterward, and while it’s undeniably touristy, it’s touristy for all the right reasons. At roughly forty dollars a roll, it’s not cheap, but it’s worth it for the quality and the experience. James Hook remains a quintessential Boston stop—fast, friendly, and all about the lobster.
Hands down one of the best lobster experiences I’ve ever had. If you’re in Boston, this is a must-try!
Want it shorter, more expressive, or more local foodie style? I’ve got you
