This is a great new BBQ place in Big Rapids!
I was very glad to see some eatery move into the old Arby’s location as this is a very convenient location for me when I’m done running errands in Big Rapids. I was thrilled when I discovered it was going to be a BBQ restaurant!
Jack & the Bear has great BBQ, using quality ingredients. They don’t put sauce on the meat. They do offer you a variety of sauces they make that you can put on. Some is included with your order, you can get more for a small fee.
They have a nice dining area with tables and chairs. They do sell a selection of soft drinks and bottled water.
The owners are very friendly and the BBQ is delicious!

Grabbed the half pound of ribs and made it a meal with a half pound of the homemade cheddar mashed potatoes. I went with the recommended sweet sauce for the meat and was blown away by the flavor. They really know their stuff at Jack and the Bear BBQ. The rib bones just slid out, perfectly clean, leaving me with massive, and delicious piles of rib meat that practically dissolved when pressed with a fork. The ribs were rich in flavor, with a perfectly cooked, crispy, exterior. The hint of cinnamon in the sauce paired fantastically with the flavor of the ribs. Honestly, I was surprised by how much a half pound of ribs was. If you’re a light eater you will definitely be taking some food home. The meal ran me around $16, and I will definitely be going back for more; I pay almost as much going to fast food for a combo meal and this blows that away.

Glad there’s a local bbq close to home. We had the family meal deal #1 with pulled pork, and brisket; 2 cheddar jacked mashed potatoes and 2 sweet slaws. We tried the Memphis sweet, Kentucky bourbon, and wasp bbq sauces. The brisket was decent and tender with a good amount of fat it was just missing a little more flavor and a slight crisp on the edges. The pulled pork was SUPERIOR. The flavor was phenomenal, it was really juicy and tender. The cheddar jacked potatoes were flavorful with butter and creamy (I would suggest a red potato with a cream base and some steak seasoning), the sweet slaw was more of a zesty cilantro slaw, it was good and fresh tasting. The Memphis sweet was top dog, it was sweet and thick with a nice brown sugar/spiced flavor. The Kentucky bourbon was a little thin with a heavy bourbon flavor and kinda tangy. The wasp tasted like it was a peppered whisky sauce and was thin. A few suggestions for sides would be a brisket Mac and cheese, fried okra slices, and maybe some fried jalapeno chips with a zesty ranch. Or maybe some jalapeno corn muffins. Otherwise it was a great find! We thoroughly enjoyed the food.

Food that invokes an joyful emotional response! It is rare to find home made style meals in a restaurant environment at a reasonable price but they have done exactly this. The friendly owners and staff take the time to listen to you and help guide you through your selection of unique and hand crafted menu options. From hearty meals to signature sauces the possibilities are almost endless.

The owners are friendly and happy to talk about the story behind the name. Other than the bread and cheese, everything is made in house from the pickles to the ice cream.
I had the smoked burnt ends burger. Good sized patty served with fresh vegetable toppings and your choice of their homemade sauces. I chose the “angry bear” sauce which is their hottest. It won’t burn your mouth but has good heat d good flavor. I got a side of their homemade fries.
Regretting I didn’t get a homemade malt to take with me for the road, but other than that it was a great visit. Great place to go and support a local family owned business. They even gave me a sample of the brisket to try and it was very moist.
This place is inside the Sunoco gas station. I almost didn’t find it. Stop in and give them a try. It’s definitely worth a visit.

I had the pulled chicken over potatoes with gravy. I myself liked mine, but my daughter got the pulled pork and she just wanted pork not ham pieces she is not a ham person. It also had a fat piece in it a big turn off. It’s a humm if it’s smoked to me a bbq should be. It might be a fatty part, but to get a chunk of fat is a glob in the mouth. You should pick the fat chunks out then…but to each their own…up to u

Jack & the Bear BBQ is phenomenal. I’m from Alabama, but on a work trip to the Big Rapids area, I tried out Jack & the Bear BBQ. I was absolutely amazed by the quality of this food. This place can go round for round with any barbecue joint in the South. My plate consisted of pulled pork, smoked brisket, cheddar smashed potatoes, and baked beans. All four times were *chef’s kiss* superb.

Finally BR has a good BBQ joint.
Simple food done exceptionally well.
No frills just meat.
This place really is the Arby’s slogan, fitting they are in the old Arby’s location.
I had the Tuesday Tacos.
Double corn tortillas, one warm and soft, one cooked and crispy. Generous chicken inside, lightly seasoned, with large bits of melted cheese, and a spicy salsa. Wonderful flavor too, looked simple tasted great. I had the loaded cheese mash potatoes. Again home run.
Crys had the 12” pulled pork “sub”?
Again generous meat, nice cheese. This sandwich would feed two people easy. We shared each other’s lunch.
We’ll be coming back.
If you’re wondering about trying them out, stop, just go.
We need to keep this place in BR.
