I stopped in for a quick lunch break on my road trip and was pleasantly surprised! The pulled pork was absolutely delicious and I like the jalapeno qdded to the mac and cheese. I had the sweet barbecue sauce that was at the table but I found out at the end that they do have spicier sauces behind the counter. The brisket was a little dry and tough. However, definitely keeping this place on the list and would return!

Great stop, got the pulled brisket and valentines special. came at 1 and luckily got it right away and tasted fresh.
My girlfriend didn’t like the potato salad, so I gave it a try, once I got a taste for it its really good!

The water from the barrel is delicious as well, if I knew, I wouldn’t have gotten the aquafina water and saved a few bucks.

Pros: fresh food, specials, fast service, and away from town. Owner seems to care about the reputation of this place and friendly.

Cons: small menu close to register, I felt rushed when I was ordering, beverages are in the fridge(Wish I saw the tap water first) wished the restroom had a more obvious sign. Girlfriend got really sick after eating here and was throwing up.

This place is a legit BBQ joint. First, it looks like a BBQ joint from the outside. Second, you can smell it from outside. Third, the interior design is correct. Fourth, you order at the counter. Last, the food is outstanding.

I always get a 3 meat platter the first time. I got brisket, sausage, ribs, potato salad, and coleslaw. That’s my go to. I was a little hesitant about the hot link with cheese. I normally don’t like cheese in my sausage. Man, that was the best cheese sausage I’ve ever had. The brisket was just right. The ribs were good, but they could have cooked a little longer. This was one of the better 3 meat combos I’ve had. It is really hard for places to nail all 3. They were close.

The potato salad was really tasty. I don’t know what kind it is, but it is delicious. The slaw was above average.

If I lived in the area, I would be eating here all the time. They give a lot of meat. I had to think hard if I should finish it all. It was so good, I stuffed myself into a meat coma.

Went here because a friend recommended it. We ordered the 3 meat plate and were so happy with the flavors we experienced. The brisket(star of the plate) was nice and tender and it’s bark was full of flavor. I really liked the chiles/peppers in the mac and cheese, it made it unique but didn’t compromise taste – it was a little sticky but I didn’t mind that. We will be back and have been sending friends here to try it as well. We went at lunch time and all the meat options were still available.

Decided to give this place a try since the reviews were so good. The staff were extremely friendly and helpful. The place was clean and there was plenty of room to sit. I was disappointed to see that they didn’t do fries but they did have traditional sides you find at BBQ places. The pork sandwich I got has a good amount of meat and the sauce was really good. The Mac and cheese was very creamy but did include jalapenos. I would come back and eat here again.

I LOVE J.R.’s BBQ. All of the meats are melt in your mouth tender and juicy and the sides are all incredible. The prices are very reasonable considering the quality and the portions. I suggest getting there before the brisket runs out!

JR’s has been our go-to spot since the day we moved to South Dakota, and it still feels like home every time we walk through the door. The food is consistently delicious, full of flavor, and cooked to perfection. The staff is always warm, welcoming, and genuinely happy to see you. Hands down the best BBQ in the Black Hills! If you’re looking for amazing food and great service, JR’s is the place to be.

Stopped two times while in SD. We had brisket, beef rib( which they make on Friday only) and pork rib tips as well few sides. Both pork and beef rib were amazing however brisket need a bit more love. On both occasions it was a bit dry and over done, but still good flavor. Staff was very friendly. All positive.

We spent a season a few years ago traveling around South Texas eating BBQ and let me tell you, J.R.’s definitely beats 99 percent of them! We ordered a half Gout because we wanted to sample it all!. It all came wrapped and packed beautifully and presented on a cardboard flat box (to go). After suffering through a long drive smelling the beautiful smoky aroma all the way home… The brisket was firm, but flavorful, with a nice bark. The pulled pork was to die for! Juicy, nice bark, tender… The ribs were melt in your mouth good. The turkey was tender and mild—not too Smoky like some are. The links were just right spicy, with cheese added in. They also throw in a half loaf of white bread or rolls. We went with the “house” BBQ sauce (vs ghost pepper), which actually transformed all these meats into what we both decided was a “spiritual” experience! It’s that good… And the sides were just as impressive! The beans were just right spicy for us, the rough cut slaw was impressive with just the right dressing and the potato salad was on point as well, South Texas style, no overpowering vinegar anywhere in the mix! Full disclosure— my wife is not a huge BBQ fan, but even this meal wowed her, and we still have enough for another meal tomorrow (no skimpy portions here!). Overall, one of the top 5 meals we’ve eaten during our travels across the 50 states! We will be going back again and again!

Wow, this BBQ is the best in the Black Hills, if not the best I’ve ever had! It’s my “go to” place and since there’s an adjoining pub, you can have delicious grub and local craft beer. The owner and his staff are genuine people who take care of their customers and enjoy your company. Thanks JR, don’t change anything, it’s simply the best thing around!
