We were just passing through town and decided to pop into J.P. Werner Cafe on a whim. Best. Decision. Ever.
First off, the staff was incredibly nice—welcoming and attentive without being overbearing. They made us feel right at home even though we were clearly just travelers passing through.
Now let’s talk about the food, because WOW. I tried something called a Dutch baby for the first time, and I’m officially obsessed. It came out in a skillet looking like a giant, puffy, golden pancake with eggs and bacon on top—absolutely amazing. I had no idea what I was ordering, but I’m so glad I took the chance.
My husband got the open-face chili burger (the one buried under a mountain of fresh shredded lettuce), and he could not stop raving about it. The combination of the hearty chili, melted cheese, and that crispy fresh lettuce was apparently perfection.
And here’s the kicker—they have a lemonade flight. Yes, you read that right. We got to try multiple flavors, including dill pickle lemonade, which sounds wild but was surprisingly refreshing and tangy in the best way.
The vibe is cozy and casual with a quirky charm that makes you want to linger. If you’re in the area (or just passing through like we were), do yourself a favor and stop at J.P. Werner Cafe. You won’t regret it.
They also sell pre-made baking mixes and spice blends you can take home, which is a great way to support a small local business even after your meal.
If you’re in Cameron or just passing through, this place is a must-try. I’ll definitely be back!
We ordered the Texas Sized Biscuit and Gravy with Scrambled Eggs as well as the Plain Jane Pancake/ Dutch Baby, 2 hot chocolates, and ended up orderingsome Dill Pickle flavored lemonade.
The lower rating on the food is primarily due to expecting a pancake and instead receiving more of a quiche. The eggie-creamy dish does not pair well with butter and syrup. I think a more savory version would have been preferred. The scrambled eggs taste of some type of cream or buttermilk add and it didn’t sit well with me. I added a good deal of pepper and salt to the Eggs and was able to eat a few bites. I’m a biscuits and gravy fan but the gravy on this dish tasted different than any I had before. The creamy consistency and taste of the “pancake” (Dutch baby) and eggs may have been better in the gravy. I half joked that we may not be fond of the food because it is too fresh! Thinking maybe all thr ingredients were grown or raised locally instead of being shipped in. Perhaps what we are used to in “the city” is over processed!
The service was good and although we were not fond of any of the food items, I think plenty of people would love it. As a matter of fact, there was a large party dining when we were sat, but not many more. Before long the establishment was near full with one or two available tables. I think most patrons were local/regulars, we were passing through and stopped by as a result of me looking for good old fashioned type of breakfast on our way back to North Texas.
The beauty of being different is that everyone has their own preferences and likes. I would recommend they not describe the Dutch Babies as “pancake-like just in a skillet”. Wanting actual pancakes this was a complete disappointment, especially for a kid/teen.
I would recommend this restaurant because you only live once, so give something different a try.
The plates our food came out on were the exact same as we had when I was a kid. The marble bar and large wooden buffet are fixtures that have been there since the 70’s. Well done!
