Couldn’t decide between seafood or the bbq chicken, I picked the bbq chicken because it was the most recommended. It did not disappoint. Fresh, juicy, flavorful, and big portion that can be shared by 2 people. And you will be served with complementary delicious chickpea salad and bread. I loved my authentic Portuguese food experience! Definitely recommend this welcoming, authentic, and underrated Portuguese restaurant.

The owner is very kind and the food was great! I loved their complimentary bread, chickpeas and butter, and their steak and cod fish were really good! The cod fish was a bit on the saltier side but if you eat it with the potatoes that come with it, it balances it out . Also, the portions are really huge!

YES, DO COME – the food is stellar!! I have a very picky Spanish friend who does not appreciate Boston Spanish restaurants (“non authentic”) but adores the authenticity of Portuguese food in this place.

I had Bacalhau Lagareiro (grilled cod, baked potatoes and olive oil) and oh boy, I already want to come back and have it again.

I was initially kinda scared to go in cause the place is a small convenience store in the front. I’m so glad I decided to eat there cause the food was damn delicious. Portions are huge, food is super tasty, service is great. The only issue is the place is literally the back part of a convenience store so if you can look past that you’ll enjoy some of the best Portuguese food around.

Hole in the Wall Restaurant that offers heartwarming Portuguese fare.

With its modest facade, one may walk past without giving it a second glance, but step inside, and you’ll be embraced by a warm, local atmosphere replete with the comforting aroma of home-cooked meals.

Before even perusing the menu, the complimentary Graco de Bico salad, served with the bread basket, set the tone for the meal. A simple ensemble of garbanzo beans, bell peppers, and onions seasoned with olive oil and vinegar, it whetted the appetite, highlighting the beauty of humble ingredients.

The appetizers, Bolinho de Bacalhau (Cod cake) and Rissois de Camarao (Shrimp cake), each encased in a golden, crispy shell, were a study in contrasts. While both were delicious in their own right, the cod cake stood out with its robust flavors and firmer texture, overshadowing the slightly watery shrimp cake.

When it came to the entrées, “generosity” was the watchword. Substantial portions ensured not just satiety, but also a delightful indulgence in simple, rustic flavors. The Grilled Chicken, drenched in a zesty garlic sauce, was tender and the sauce added a nice tang. The Bacalhau a Casa, with its elastic texture, was also good. However, a small hiccup was the presence of bones, which made savoring the dish a tad challenging.

J J Restaurant brings to the table a unique rendition of Portuguese cuisine, deviating slightly from the more popular variants found in Portuguese spots across Cambridge. But it’s this very deviation that’s its charm. The unpretentious ambiance, combined with hearty meals and affable service, makes it an occasional must-visit, especially for those seeking a genuine taste of Portugal without the frills.

What an unexpected gem. We were unsure when we pulled up. It looks like a convenience store from the outside. Hidden behind a little wall, we found some delicious food with large portions! We tried new foods and are so happy we did. There is no parking lot and parking on the street is sparse, but if you can find a way inside, the food was great. They recommended the chicken and it did not disappoint. The fish and chips, which were okay. The salmon was good. A favorite at the table was a complimentary garbanzo bean dish. I would go back for that alone. Those three meals fed four hungry people with leftovers. It is nothing fancy, but it was filling and delicious.

I just love getting their food. My dad would always get us their Chicken ( Frango) when we would come to Ma to visit. He has since passed and we always make that our stop 2 years later. If you haven’t tried it then you can’t imagine how good it is. Thanks dad and thanks to JJ’s for putting your love into the food!

Hidden gem. You cannot find places like this in other parts of the country. I come from San Francisco and the line would be out the door and double the price.

You can’t fake this…it’s the real deal, authentic Portuguese home cooking that’s better than 99% of what you’d find at fancier places.

Go and celebrate this rare neighborhood beauty – be kind, be curious, be humble. You’ll leave happy.

Ordered pickup on my way home today for the first time. The rice and chicken was so amazing and the dinner rolls were also very good! Will be back again soon.
