Elegant steak and seafood restaurant McLean, Virginia
My first visit to J. Gilbert Wood-Fired Steaks & Seafood was nothing short of memorable. We celebrated my niece’s 25th birthday with a party of 12 and were seated in a private dining room, which turned out to be the perfect setting for an intimate family celebration.
Our server Travis was absolutely excellent—attentive, professional, and genuinely warm. He made sure every detail was taken care of, kept the experience smooth from start to finish, and brought a great personality that truly elevated the night. He made the celebration feel special and personal for our family.
The atmosphere was relaxed and upscale with a chill, low-light setting. The exposed brick walls, paired with beautifully curated artwork, created a warm, sophisticated backdrop and made the perfect setting for capturing lasting memories together.
The food was fresh, beautifully plated, and delicious. While the portions are smaller—as expected with fine dining—they were surprisingly satisfying and thoughtfully prepared. I even had leftovers to take home, which was a nice bonus. The overall pleasure and satisfaction after the meal were right on point.
If you’re looking for a place that feels upscale yet affordable, perfect for celebrations, date nights, or special gatherings, this restaurant delivers. I’ll absolutely be back and highly recommend it.

Considering the restaurant goes for a more white table cloth vibe of a fine dining experience, imagine my dismay when seated at what felt like a fold out card table. Turns out when a waiter swapped table cloths next to us, that’s exactly what it was. A plywood topped, unfinished folding table that came from a rental company.
Now I get it, turns out Valentine’s Day weekend is busy. I guess they were packing people in. Unfortunately when you do that, you start operating beyond your capacity in the kitchen and front of house.
Our waiter was friendly but often absent because of the business. My cocktail was served in a cracked glass, and so was my wife’s water.
The food, was somewhat disappointing. The hight lights were dessert (peanut butter pie) and the green beans, which had a nice crunch. The dessert was so good it would be almost worth revisiting for that. Unfortunately the steaks were overcooked. The medium rare filets, while beautiful looking with a nice crunch, we’re closer to an awkward medium well. Where the dead center might be closer to medium. But most of the steak was closer to well done. I watched multiple dishes go back to the kitchen for a similar reason. The mashed potatoes were fine, the creamed corn was fresh, the Mac and cheese was soupy with over boiled noodles.
I won’t say it was a complete disappointment l, and the slightly price point softens the blow. However, I wouldn’t go back, there are plenty of steakhouses in the area and they’re likely all a bit better than this experience. Perhaps I can chalk it up to a busy weekend, but if the restaurant overbooked intentionally for money, that shows you they may not care as much about quality.
restaurant in McLean. The food was absolutely amazing as always, and our server Albert was outstanding he was extremely professional and treated us with great care. Everything was perfect, and I would definitely recommend this place to all my friends.
Food we had the shrimp, scallops. wings, bacon. Wedge sals, crab cakes, lamb chop, and someone had pre fixw meal.
Whenever you go, please see Travis. You won’t be disappointed. He was so knowledgeable and attentive to us.
Service was absolutely exceptional. Our server Tim B. was honestly one of the best we’ve ever had. Super friendly, upbeat, attentive, and just made the whole evening more fun.
The food was good, but a few things kept it from being perfect. The miso sea bass was cooked well but definitely needed more seasoning and sauce. There was a small drizzle of sauce on the plate, but not enough to balance the dish — and most of it had dried onto the plate so I had to scrape it up to use it. We also ordered several steaks and 3 of the 4 came out overcooked.
Desserts were good. I had been looking forward to the 24-layer cake. It was huge for sure but a bit dry so I was a bit disappointed.
Still, we really enjoyed the night, and the service alone makes Gilbert’s worth a visit. With a little more consistency on the food, this would have easily been a 5-star experience.
We’ve had the pleasure of having Tim B. as our server, and he truly goes above and beyond to make our experience welcoming and memorable. We also noticed how he treated other guests with the utmost respect and had great knowledge of the menu.
As a business owner myself in the customer service industry, I can recognize someone who has truly mastered their role. Tim B. is one of those people. I hope the management and staff know what a great team member they have!
