I absolutely LOVE J Alexander. This is one of my all time favorite restaurants. The food, the service, the drinks, the atmosphere is all TOP TIER! My favorite is their pear martinis

I stopped by J. Alexander’s and tried the Brasserie Chicken along with their sweet tea. The chicken was perfectly cooked—juicy and tender—with a rich, savory sauce that paired beautifully with the sides. The flavors felt balanced and comforting, like a refined take on a classic bistro dish. The sweet tea was just the right level of sweetness, refreshing without being syrupy. Service was attentive and warm, making the whole experience feel relaxed yet upscale. Definitely a spot I’d return to for a reliably great meal.

Husband and I tried this place for the first time for Valentine’s Day dinner. Wavered between a 4 or a 5. The food was decadent – creamy, flavorful, has a little kick but overall a little heavy. Calamaris and marinara sauce were probably my favorite, plus the Mac n cheese, but couldn’t eat much of any of my food (trout almondine with mustard beurre blanc and couscous and broccoli) – while the char on the trout was exquisite, the big couscous with bell peppers was difficult to eat for me in terms of flavor combo with the beurre blanc. The parmesan on the couscous and broccoli made them palatable. The Mac n cheese was heavenly but again was so decadent that we could only eat half. We also got dessert which was gigantic – appreciate their big portions. They also didn’t have any sweet tea (only non sweet) when I asked for half and half, and that didn’t have non caffeinated fruit teas – one server said they had chamomile but then they didn’t. Our server Jim was absolutely fantastic and so thoughtful and sweet, not annoying or imposing, very respectful. The ambience was calm with candles and dim lighting. I really liked our booth and felt we had a lot of privacy. Note that you need to make a reservation ahead of time – a guy came in with his wife and child and said that they were on the wait-list but the hostess said they were fully booked for the night. Probably will order the salad next time and it’ll prob be a 5.

I really enjoyed this restaurant. All of the hostess greeted us upon arrival and we were immediately seated for our reservation. Our waiter Adrian gave us great recommendations for drinks, appetizers and main entrees. We truly enjoyed the food, our steak was cooked to perfection, the Mac n cheese and smashed potatoes and broccoli were very tasty. And the bartenders definitely know how to make a lemon drop Definitely will be back. Please keep up the great customer service and keep serving delicious affordable food

This restaurant is popular with older folks for several reasons. Good food. Good service. Non-rediculous prices. But also, booths and low density crowds that allow older patrons to actually hear each other in conversation. I can personally recommend the deviled egg appetizers, the Thai salmon special (perfectly cooked), the Key Lime pie and creamed spinach. Desserts good, but limited selections.

This restaurant is a hidden gem for anyone looking to enjoy a truly exceptional meal. I had a perfectly grilled Filet Mignon, while my wife had a deliciously crafted burger (we shared a bit). The service was impeccable, thanks to Mrs. Chloe, our attentive and gracious server, who made us feel right at home. If you’re in town, this is a must-visit spot for one of the best steaks you’ll find in the area.
Note 1: I returned today 10/19/25 to enjoy a prime rib perfectly medium. Great quality of a dish and service.
Note 2: I returned today 12/10/25 and had another prime rib, this time with cauliflower. It was excellent. I also want to highlight the attentive service from Mrs. Valery—truly a gracious and professional presence. Outstanding yet relaxed, a perfect combination that makes the experience even better.

Adam was our bartender and did a outstanding job. I was craving the key lime pie and it did not disappoint. My wife is in love with the veggie burger…. Which if you add enough mayonnaise, ketchup and hot sauce it almost tastes good…..Just kidding. Great trip to Jay Alexander’s will be back soon.

Contemporary American spot with hardwood‑grilled steaks, seafood and classic dishes in an inviting, slightly upscale setting. Many diners praise attentive service and flavorful entrees, though quality and consistency can vary by visit. Great for date nights or special meals, but not always worth the premium price.

[August 2024 update. Still one of our favorite comfort spots for great service and spot-on food. Terrific cocktails too.] How can it be that I’ve never left a review for J. Alexander? We love this place and have since it was Merus Grill. J.A.’s has a very relaxed, calming atmosphere with comfortable booths, some tables for larger groups and a large, elegant bar. The staff is some of the best in Houston and always make us feel so welcome. (A special shout-out to Ken, Judy and Gabriela.) We’ve eaten here dozens of times, and the quality and consistency of the food is really impressive. The portions are extremely generous without skimping quality. They did a very good job of freshening up the regular menu with interesting specials ranging from fish tacos to sweet BBQ Thai salmon. The fried calamari is perfect, tender and crunchy. If you order salad here, you’ll feel plenty full after eating because we are talking Mount Salad here. If you like dessert, this is the place to indulge. Again, make sure you plan to share! The wine and bar selections are fabulous. And for people like me who prefer a hot drink after a meal, the Earl Gray teapot service and French press coffee can’t be beat. A++++

Sunday brunch after church. Somewhat disappointing. It was dark and cold inside on a sunny day. While our servers were knowledgeable and polite, service was slower than should be expected. We all ordered steaks – 2 medium, one medium well. What came out was 2 medium rare and one medium/medium rare. We brought this to their attention – but no accommodation was offered. Lesson learned. Not likely to return.
