This is our go-to date night spot. Tonight was extra spectacular because we had a new fantastic Server, Gabby! Ask for her, you’ll love her!

The swordfish was the best dish Js has ever made – in my opinion ( also highly recommended by Gabby) and I am a HUGE regular fan of their salmon … every time I come in.

Thank you for another great date night!
See you soon, Gabby! You were a joy!

I’ve been a long-time fan of this restaurant and almost always order the slow-roasted prime rib at medium rare. It’s consistently been tender, tasty, and full of flavor. However, during my visit yesterday, I experienced something very different.

My usual prime rib arrived much rarer than normal and unusually tough to cut — something I’ve never encountered with this dish. For the first time in all my years of dining out, I sent a steak back to the kitchen.

When it returned, the situation only became more puzzling. The appearance looked off, and the flavor and texture didn’t resemble the prime rib I’ve always enjoyed here. It was disappointing enough that I couldn’t finish it, which has never happened before. I boxed it up, hoping I might be able to salvage it at home.

Despite this one-off experience, I still consider this a quality restaurant and plan to return. That said, this incident makes me hesitant to order my longtime favorite again. I’m hopeful this was just an unusual hiccup in an otherwise excellent track record, but it certainly stood out compared to years of consistently great meals.

Great service and friendly staff, the food is delicious. Never disappoint. Kassy was our server. she was very friendly and attentive., drinks was were also very good well-made however, after finishing our meal, we asked for coffee we did get them, but when we asked for another round, the server said they are out they are not making more. It was a little bit disappointing and letdown after spending a few hundred dollars. This is not a complaint. Just suggestion take care of your customers ,

This was our first time visiting J. Alexander’s, and we had an excellent experience. The food was tremendous, and the whole staff was very friendly. Would highly recommend J. Alexander’s to anyone looking for a great steakhouse experience.

What has happened to this J Alexander’s? It was my go-to spot (2-3 times per week) for 15 years but not anymore. The food quality and quantity are now very inconsistent. There seems to be no kitchen management. I went for dinner recently at around 6:15 pm and they were already out of two of their featured menu items. There are lots of new servers who apparently get no training. They take your order and you never see them again. (Bartenders are still very good if you can manage a seat at the bar.) Orders are often followed incorrectly and arrive at the table wrong. Hosts are friendly but not very bright. I’ve made reservations several times recently but been told there’s a 30 minute wait when I arrive. Overall, seems that most who work there just don’t care about good customer service. While I understand that costs have gone up everywhere, the quality of the food and service here don’t merit the higher prices.

Probably my favorite restaurant in Dayton, even though it’s a chain. We come here often and have rarely had anything not be perfect. Usually the service is so fast and the courses come out very quickly. Some of my favorite things are the Alex’s salad, rotisserie chicken, pork tenderloin, and the filet mignon. Steaks are usually perfectly cooked. Dimly lit and cozy atmosphere, usually still not too loud.

It was nice don’t know if they changed up their NY strip steak but did not taste, or look like there normal NY strip.

It looked more like a ribeye steak than a my steak

I visit this restaurant very frequently. I like going somewhere that is familiar to me, and where I am familiar to the servers.

Service is always prompt, courteous and knowledgeable. I’ve both sat at tables and at the bar and always been pleased with the servers. Sometimes the bar is busy and that makes a difference, but that can’t be helped; but my point is, even then, I always have what I need and the servers are responsive.

I tend to order the same things; so obviously I like the food! A few months back, I spoke with the manager about some unevenness in the food. He was very responsive. I’m not claiming my conversation was the cause, but since then, there was a noticeable improvement. Someone behind the bar said a chef or some other expert came in to give some pointers. In any case, much more even, high quality. My steak comes out the right way each time!

While I almost always get a NY Strip or sometimes Prime Rib, I recently got the Steak au Poivre, and that was impressive!

Dan makes an excellent (gin) martini and he remembers how I like it. The sidecar is a nice bonus.

The carrot cake is so good; too good.

I don’t often get the steak roll appetizer, only because it really can be a meal by itself. The smoked salmon dip is astonishingly good. Quibble: it might benefit from a sprinkle of cayenne. The Alex Salad is one of my mainstays. The Hong Kong Shrimp is always delicious.

I really appreciate the flexibility with sides.

If ever J. Alex. would decide to have a shrimp cocktail, I’ll order it, but that’s also a quibble; I’m sure there are good reasons not to have something like that!

Keep up the good work!

First time at J Alexander’s and we loved it. We had the Bayou pasta and the Tuscan steak. We also had the deviled eggs and a few drinks. Everything was well priced. I didn’t care for the drinks I got as every cocktail seemed vodka based. The food was good and so was the service. Key lime pie for dessert was also good and I normally don’t like key lime.

Ordered the French Dip today, along with the queso and seafood pasta for my wife. Q & pasta was good, although the chips we got initially were literally that, small broken pieces. Asked for more and got some full size chips. French Dip on the other hand was crap. Meat was COLD upon delivery and had four pieces of rough chewy grizzle in it. I wouldn’t recommend it, from this location at least. Had food delivered and waited five mins for silverware. $110 later I left hungry.

Not good. Never asked how our food was.
