Social Profile:

Izakaya Fishtown is a collaborative Japanese restaurant. A dimly-lit dining experience brought to life through its high-energy bar and table dining with a playlist to match. The menu includes a raw bar and cooked items along with a bar to accommodate the proper cocktail, sakes, beers, and wines to pair with your dining experience. It is also home to one of the very few High Ball machines in the city of Philadelphia, and the only that carries Roku Gin. A few of the noted dishes to try, although each dish on the menu does not disappoint, are the Tantan Mazemen, Hamachi, Toro Scallion roll, and any of the weekend specials . Keep up with us for the soon-to-come omakase room!

I’m really sad to write this because I live down the block and have gone here numerous times in the last two years but the quality of the food is diminishing. Every time I go to/get food from izakaya the dishes come out differently. There seems to be no quality control and people literally put different ingredients in the meals, sometimes they add spicy mayo to things that don’t even have it on the menu (which is also an allergen). They lost their liquor license a few months ago and the vibe inside is dull, I would go there to get drinks and enjoy the ambiance but with a whole wall of empty shelves it’s pretty dismal. Most recently I ordered two dishes that I get very frequently, lil fried squids and a salmon donburi bowl. The salmon (usually nice chunks, instead is little shredded bits, like lunch meat almost. It looks like someone ripped it up with their hands instead of slicing it? And the lil squids are majority batter, and there is also just some random calamari pieces thrown in which I’ve never seen, maybe they ran out of squids? I want them to do well again, but it seems like things are only getting worse. Sorry guys, I’m a little frustrated about it.

My server and bar tender was amazing! Very knowledgeable about the food and attentive to my needs. The food was delicious. Unless you’re eating the Waygu Robata, don’t worry about making it for happy hour. Happy hour menu is basically smaller portions of the regularly priced stuff. Food came out promptly and hit the spot for what you’ll be looking for. I’ll be back for HH because I enjoy the smaller portions.
Summary:
Service: 6/5 stars
Food quality: 5/5 stars
Price to quality: 4/5 stars

Portions sizes, especially of the ramen was quite large, enough for two to three people. The sushi was really flavorful and fresh, prices were reasonable.

I went during Happy Hour. It’s BYOB and they suggest going across the street to a winery which I think is nice and convenient. It was pretty empty, which I was fine with which means quick service. I ordered the Chicken Yakitori, Pork Gyoza, and Spicy Tuna Rice Crisps. My food came out warm, I think it definitely would have been better hot. The best thing was the Spicy Tuna Rice Crisps

Beautiful spot! The interior is very cozy. The staff are so attentive and friendly. Got a “thank the boiler man” mocktail. It was delicious, kinda like a ginger ale type of tea without bubbly fizz. Got tuna rice crisps, curry short rib bao, duck onigiri, sashimi appetizer, and citrus bomb speciality roll. The bao, onigiri and sashimi are must haves! So delicious. The fish was so fresh and almost sweet! Bao and onirigi were so flavorful. The appetizers were larger than I was expecting. The roll and sashimi was exactly size I thought it was going to be for a pricey resturant. Tuna rice crisps are exactly what you think it’d be like. The citrus bomb would be a pass for next time.

Good drinks but rather mediocre food.

Started off with ordering one of every item from the small plates section to get a broad perspective. I’d say more than half was underwhelming and none was memorable. Read one review that recommended the fatty tuna roll which was just alright. This opinion was shared by the party at the table.

Venue is pretty but quite dark. It’s big so can accompany a large party and there is a nice bar area. I think this place is nice to hang out and have a few drinks at the bar but For me, I’ll maybe skip the food unless I’m super hungry.

So… I’ve been here before, within the last 2 years a couple times, & it was always really good. Tonight was so underwhelming and disappointing. We didn’t know it was BYOB due to whatever licensing issues they’re trying to figure out, we had a reservation and wasn’t made aware. I’ve ordered appetizers I’ve had before, and they didn’t taste fresh at all. Some things we didn’t even eat like the salt and pepper wings & the snow crab wonton tacos. Everything was very blah. The bang shrimp were super tiny and not even crispy like before. Apart from the food being very disappointing, the service was terrible, maybe they were having a bad night bc the same woman was taking care of all the tables. Needless to say we’ll never be back.

I’ve looked forward to trying this place when I found out it was opened by Kevin Yanaga, who worked with Starr and Schulson. The place has bar seating and table seating, first come first serve, no waitlist. Would recommend going early and not during peak dinner hours. Menu is relatively small, but with a decent variety of hot and cold foods. Price is not bad as well, average $10 per plate. All dishes are small tapas style, great for sharing. Overall, there are hits and misses. Cold food was a lot better than hot food.

DINNER
* Toro scallion maki – MUST GET. This roll was my favorite. Very comparable to toro you would get at Omakase. Fresh, quality, and they did not skimp out on the amount

* West Coast Oysters – MUST GET. My 2nd favorite item. Although the oysters are small, they are so fresh and texture so buttery, basically melted in my mouth. They clean it very well too. Would recommend getting

Hamachi sashimi – pretty fresh yellowtail sashimi. Sauce is a bit on the lighter side compared to other hamachi dishes I’ve had.

-Shrimp tacos – pretty good. It was unique that the taco shell is actually a fried wonton shell. I liked that it had a large piece of shrimp in it

-Karaage – pieces were huge but not as fried crispy as other karaage I’ve had. Batter was a bit think and kinda soggy

-Duck Bibimbap – basically duck meat mixed in rice in a shape of onigiri. Didn’t really get much duck.

-Snow crab maki – snow crab didn’t have much of a flavor. Kind of disappointed

-Tantan mazemen – would not recommend getting. The sesame flavor of the meat sauce overpowered everything. No depth of flavor and it wasn’t that spicy.

*VERDICT*
I probably would not go back again unless someone ask me to, and if I did, I would probably just stick to sushi.

Fast and friendly service, nice vibe and really good food. Will be back. Duck Onigiri, tan tan mazemen, shrimp sashimi and toro tartare were some of the standouts.

The east meets west cocktail was really good, as was the Mrs Robinson. Some dishes are bigger and could easily be a meal without anything else on the side

They serve food like tapas for sharing. They come in small plates.

The sushi and sashimi is below average for the price they charge. The 50+ sashimi deluxe is below average for the price they charge. The cooked food all have way too much sauce. You don’t get that with traditional Japanese food. If you like sauce covering the fish, beef or pork then you’ll like it. That’s just not my cup of tea.

The fish and meats we ordered were over cooked.

Overall- below average food and way too much sauce on cooked foods. I tend to agree with the others who say food was mediocre aka below average. If I’m spending over $100 a person for food and drinks I expected better quality and flavors.
